Meet Houston's Backwoods Beauty, Blaketree National Golf Club

If the hackneyed term “Hidden Gem” was ever to be used accurately to describe a single outstanding golf course that separated itself from the lot of out of the way layouts, surely it would be wisely deployed in honor of Montgomery’s Blaketree National Golf Club.

Located in the sedate and remarkably stunning Southeast Texas countryside, roughly 20 minutes from Lake Conroe and a little more than an hour from downtown Houston, Blaketree is the result of attorney turned oil wildcatter Thomas W. Blake’s ambition to build a private playground for himself and his friends to enjoy.

Blaketree National Golf Club

The course was designed by Thomas Blake. Construction began in 1985, but economically motivated stops and starts pushed the project’s completion date back to 2000. Blake did play the course before his death. The course is now under new ownership, and the true brilliance and full potential of this once romanticized golf getaway are being discovered by golfers who eagerly travel from far and wide to discover Texas’ true hidden golf treasure.

Blaketree boasts a number of characteristics more commonly associated with a classic Texas Hill Country course than a layout found on the outskirts of Houston. The 7,196-yard par-71 layout was carved into thick, rolling terrain framed by towering pines and oaks. Overall the course encompasses 325 acres, none of which are occupied by homes or sullied with the trappings of city life. Blaketree was envisioned as and remains a pure golf experience.

Concealed by the inviting scenery is the formidable challenge offered by Blaketree National. Golfers will be tested from all five sets of tees by dramatic elevation changes, seven lakes, doglegs in each direction, sloping fairways and traditionally slick greens. Blaketree is considered a reasonably affordable round, and an even more attractive “Stay and Play” option. Recently, the Dallas Morning News voted the course No. 2 among mid-range priced golf operations in the greater Houston area.

Consider crashing at Blaketree’s Magnolia Cottage, the house that Mr. Blake built and furnished for his family and friends, if you’re entertaining thoughts of turning your visit into a multi-day trip.
