Jacob Davis and Steve Veriato grab top spots in 2011 Club Car Memorial Championship

Jacob Davis needed a final-hole birdie to win the Club Car Memorial Championship.Jacob Davis won the 2011 Club Car Memorial Championship on the strength of a 36-hole score of 4-under-par 73-67—140, finishing one stroke up on Brian Marini at The Club at Carlton Woods.

But it wasn’t that simple, and, in fact, it was a battle royale. When the second round began, here was a knot of players within 3 strokes of Eric Bogar’s first-round leading score of 71, and the contest remained just about that close throughout the final 18 holes, but Davis began to make his case for the title beginning on the eighth hole. From that point forward, he scored a pair of pars, a pair of bogeys, and ... seven birdies, just enough to reward him with his first STPGA major championship victory, and in fact, his first win in an STPGA tournament of any kind.

His previous high finish in a Section event was fifth place in the Section’s 2010 Assistant Championship.

“It feels great to win,” said Davis. “I’ve played pretty well in Section events but haven’t finished well. This time I made the putts I needed to ... my putter was really hot on the back nine.”

While Davis was on his way to a closing nine of 32, Marini was hanging in. Somebody had to finish second, though, and this time around, it was Marini, who closed with a 33 and and a total of 74-67—144 for runner-up honors.

Davis earned $2,800 for the win and Marini took home second-place money of $2,000. Bogar matched his first round for a 71-71—142 total and third-place winnings of $1,600.

Greg Hiller and Lonny Alexander tied for third place and earnings of $975 each, Hiller going 73-70—143 and Alexander 72-71—143.

Steve Veriato won the tournament’s Senior Division and $1,000 with a score of 74-73—147 for a 2-2-stroke edge over Garry Rippy and Bob Kirkelie.

Rippy, who posted a 71-78—149 total, and Kirkelie, at 72-77—149, earned $525 each.

A trio of professionals tied for third place and checks of $150 each. Troy Schleicher and Marty Fleckman both went 75-75—150 for their shares of the tie and Carl Baker posted a 68-82—150 for the third share.
