AT&T Championship, Southern Texas PGA to Offer New Junior-Am Event

Over 3,000 youngsters took part in the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf program this summer, and, thanks to a new partnership between the AT&T Championship and the STPGA, three dozen of them will have the opportunity to play in a nine-hole “junior-am” event just prior to the upcoming AT&T Championship.

The PGA Champions Tour event will take place Oct. 26-28 on the AT&T Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio. The new junior-am will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 23, and will pair four junior golfers with a PGA Champions Tour member for an informal, nine-hole competition.

The Southern Texas PGA has conducted a similar event in conjunction with the annual Insperity Championship for the past five years.

“We’re committed to hosting a junior-am at the AT&T Championship,” said Colby Callaway, tournament director for Pro Links Sports, which manages the Houston and San Antonio PGA Champions Tour events.

“We saw its functionality in Houston last year and were just floored,” added Callaway. “We want to be part of something like that.”

Just as is the case for the Insperity Championship Junior-Am, the youngsters in the AT&T Championship junior-am will be select themselves through their play in the STPGA Academy Sports+Outdoors Little Linksters and Junior Tour Championships, which are taking place this week (Aug. 8-9) at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas.

Following the close of play in those tournaments, a pre-determined number of youngsters from each of nine age- and gender-based divisions will be invited to play in the AT&T Championship junior-am.

“Having one of the tournaments in the spring and one in the fall will help them mesh together well,” Callaway said, “while creating more chances for youngsters to play more golf. We’ve got a great facility to work with and we want to get the most out of it we can. One part of that is increasing our commitment to and involvement in junior golf.”

Additional information about the AT&T Championship junior-am (and what Callaway describes as something that will become more of a junior golf day) will be forthcoming soon. Questions about the new event may be directed to Mike Ray, the Southern Texas PGA’s Executive Director, at 832-442-2404.
