Eagle Pointe STPGA Foundation Pro-Am

STPGA Foundation Pro-Am at Eagle Pointe chalks up another successful year

Eagle Pointe Golf Club hosted its seventh annual STPGA Foundation Pro-Am on Apr. 23, and once again set a record for the amount of funds it raised to the benefit of the Foundation and the Section’s junior golf operations.

This year’s event raised $20,000, pushing the total amount of funds raised for the Foundation to over $90,000 in the tournament’s seven-year history.

The pro-am enjoys such support that two shotgun starts, one morning and one afternoon, are required.

Zoran Zorkic led his amateur partners— Cliff West, Cody Clifton, Herb Clifton and David Francis— to the top spot in the morning field. The winners posted a two best balls score of 124 for the top spot, finishing 2 strokes better than the runner-up team, which included professional Tirrel Baymon and amateurs John Lozano, Douglas Boldt, Robert Donkor and Maurice Shaw.

Shawn Stefani and his amateur partners, Don Motley, Bill Walles, Charlie Edwards and Danny Jones tied the team of professional Garrison Nordt, Doug Watson, Ernie Cruse, Hal Taylor and Craig McCurdy for third place at 127.

Five teams posted scores of 128 and finished 18 holes tied for the top spot in the afternoon field. Professional Larry Courtney and amateurs Scott Hale, Nick Snell, Mike Haley and Craig Crudington took first place in the ensuing playoff, followed in second place by professional Doug Fipps and amateurs Russell Tippie, Jeff Waltzer, Jon Jackson and Larry Turbeville.

Professional Ryan Polzin and his amateur partners, John Daniels, Chris Daniels, Kim Broderick and Ron Griffin took the third spot.

Carl Cooper took first place in the professional competition, winning $600 for his score of 68.

Mike Kullberg followed, finishing at 69 for winnings of $500. Shawn Stefani and Zoran Zorkic tied for third place at 71, earning $425 each.

“I feel it is important to give back to the game, the community and our Section,” said Jeff Strong, head golf professional and general manager at Eagle Pointe.

“The Southern Texas PGA operates one of the largest junior golf programs in the country and it is important to me and many of my fellow professionals who support the game of golf and our section programs that we continue to grow the program,” Strong said in explaining why he chose the STPGA Foundation, through which the STPGA funds its junior golf functions, as the pro-am’s beneficiary.

“In order to do that, we must generate the funds the operations require,” said Strong, “and that means working together in a united effort to secure the future of our game and the STPGA Foundation. Hopefully, the Eagle Pointe STPGA Foundation Pro-Am is a contributor to that cause.”
