Financial Aid Program Aims to Help STPGA Junior Golfers

STPGA Junior GolfThe goal of the Southern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Foundation is to introduce youngsters throughout the southern half of Texas to the challenges and rewards of golf.

In 2009 alone, more 2,700 youngsters took part in the activities offered through the two organizations.

The Southern Texas PGA believes the opportunity to participate in its junior golf programs should not be limited only to those who can afford to play a comprehensive junior golf schedule.

Now, in an effort to make the game available to even more young golfers and thanks to the support of the Harmon Family Foundation, the STPGA Foundation has created the Dick Harmon Participation Scholarship program.

Named for long-time PGA Professional Dick Harmon, who passed away on Feb. 10, 2006, and who was known for his passionate support of junior golf, the program will provide financial assistance to young golfers who might not otherwise be able to take part in the STPGA’s junior golf programs.

Any junior residing within the region may apply for a Dick Harmon Participation Scholarship provided he or she is between the ages of 6 and 18 as of Sept. 1, 2010 and can establish the need for financial assistance.

Application forms are available on the “Junior Golf & Scholarships” page of the Southern Texas PGA Web site (www.stpga.com). The final selection of scholarship recipients will be determined by the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf Committee and the Southern Texas PGA Foundation Board of Directors.

Funds disbursed to the program will be allocated to and credited to the respective recipient’s junior golf “account” within the STPGA Academy Sports + Outdoors Junior Golf Program. No cash will be distributed.

The funds can be used by the recipient to cover the various expenses in each of the STPGA’s junior golf activities - the STPGA Academy Sports + Outdoors Junior Tour, the STPGA Academy Sports + Outdoors Junior Links Tour, and the STPGA Academy Sports + Outdoors Little Linksters.
Complete details about each of those programs may be found within the “Junior Golf & Scholarships” section of www.stpga.com.

The awarding of a Dick Harmon Participation Scholarship does not guarantee entry into specific STPGA junior golf events. Recipients will still be required to follow standard STPGA junior golf program requirements and procedures to be entered in clinics and tournaments.

The total number of scholarships to be disbursed will be determined by the total number of qualified candidates and availability of funds. Dick Harmon Participation Scholarships will be awarded to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Application forms for the STPGA Foundation Dick Harmon Participation Scholarship Program may be found on the “Junior Golf & Scholarships” page of www.stpga.com.
