Region-wide STPGA Junior Golf Day set for April 9

The Southern Texas PGA will conduct its first-ever Junior Golf Day on Saturday, April 9. The region-wide effort involves a number of golf facilities that will be hosting special junior golf clinics from 1 p.m. through 2 p.m.

The timing is no accident. With the Spring golf season getting under way, the STPGA hopes the activities will attract young golfers to their favorite courses and practice facilities for free lessons.

The date of the STPGA Junior Golf Day also coincides with a special three-week stretch of time in which golf will receive extended attention. The Shell Houston Open will take place the week before Junior Golf Day, the Valero Texas Open the week after and April 9 happens to be the date of the third round of The Masters.

With television coverage of the Masters beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Apr. 9, the timing will allow youngsters and their parents plenty of time to take part in one of the junior golf clinics and still get home in time to enjoy coverage of the first major championship of 2011.

In some cases, facilities hosting one of the clinics may offer additional special activities to celebrate the beginning of the 2011 golf season.

“We’ve got a great junior golf program that serves youngsters throughout our region year round,” said Glenn Lee, president of the Southern Texas PGA. “Junior Golf Day will serve as a kind of kick-off point for our 2011 activities. Our 2011 summer program starts in early June and this will give kids who are veterans of our activities the chance to get the year off to a good start while giving those who haven’t been involved with us in the past a chance to sample what we offer.”

“And, of course, those attending one of the free clinics on Junior Golf Day will have the opportunity to learn from one or more of our member professionals,” added Lee, “and they’ll have that opportunity in a relaxed, fun activity.”

“At Horseshoe Bay, we plan to offer a complimentary clinic and then an ice cream party for the parents and kids inside,” said Lee, who is the director of golf at Horseshoe Bay Resort, “We’ll have the Saturday round of the Masters on the big screen during the ice cream party, so those who want to stay and enjoy the tournament with their friends and family can do so.”

Interested golfers should check with their local facilities to find out if they are participating in the STPGA’s Junior Golf Day. As of April 1, 34 facilities have formalized plans to host a clinic (see below). It’s expected that a number of other clubs and courses will make their plans over the course of the next few days . . .. an updated list of participating facilities will be posted on the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf web site (
