Southern Texas PGA tabs Mark Steinbauer as its 2011 Golf Professional of the Year

Award winners to be honored in Feb. 13 ceremony at Sterling Country Club in Cypress

Mark Steinbauer, the director of golf at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, has been selected from a distinguished list of nominees as the Southern Texas PGA’s Golf Professional of the Year for 2011.

The honor is the latest in a long line of honors for the 52-year-old native of St. Paul, Minn. A member of the PGA of America since 1986, Steinbauer was presented with the STPGA’s Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year Award for 1994. He has received the STPGA’s Horton Smith Award three times (in 1996, 1999 and 2000) in recognition of his work in the arena of PGA member education, and was honored as the STPGA’s 2010 Bill Strausbaugh Award for his work in club relations.

“I view the honors I’ve received equally, as steps on the ladder of my progression as a PGA Professional,” said Steinbauer. “While each of the previous awards the STPGA has given me represents achievement in specific areas of a PGA golf professional’s responsibilities, the Golf Professional of the Year honor, to me, signifies the balance I’ve worked toward in my career. All the awards are special to me, but obviously, this one stands out. I look at it as the top award in my career.”

As he should. The Golf Professional of the Year award is the STPGA’s highest honor and the recipient is chosen on the basis of his or her overall performance as a PGA golf professional, level of service to the Southern Texas PGA, leadership, image, ability to inspire fellow professionals and service to the region’s golf community.

The membership of the STPGA includes over 800 members and professionals located throughout the southern half of Texas; the Section has chosen one of its members annually since 1968 to receive the award.

Steinbauer’s service to the PGA of America and its Southern Texas Section includes a four-year stint on the latter’s Board of Directors. He was the chairman of the STPGA Scholarship Committee for two years.

He is a member of the PGA of America’s Education Department and is a frequent speaker at PGA events at the national and Section levels. He is a member of the teaching division faculty of the PGA’s Professional Golf Management Program, through which all prospective members of the PGA must pass before earning membership in the organization.

He is a four-time member of Golf Digest’s “Top Teachers in America” roster and is on Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Teachers in America” list and is one of eight members of a Presidential Advisory Board for TaylorMade. The frequent subject of instructional articles for Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, and other regional and national golf publications, Steinbauer’s first book— “18 Game-Changing Lessons: Talking Golf with Legends and Pros”— was published last year.

Steinbauer will receive formal presentation of the STPGA Golf Professional of the Year award at the Southern Texas PGA’s 2012 President’s Dinner. The dinner will be held on Feb. 13, 2012, at Sterling Country Club in Cypress, Texas, in conjunction with the STPGA’s 44th Annual Meeting and Education Program.

Steinbauer will be joined on the podium at the STPGA’s 2012 President’s Dinner by a number of additional honorees— the complete list of 2011 Southern Texas PGA award recipients is below.
