Tim Thelen opens with a win

Eight-time Southern Texas PGA Player of the Year Tim Helen of New Ulm is eligible for the 2011 Bridgestone Golf STPGA Senior Series, and he wasted no time letting his fellows know.

Thelen, winner of the European Senior Tour Qualifying School last fall, won the Overall and Senior Division (ages 50-57) competitions in the inaugural tournament on the 2001 Senior Series calendar with a score of 1-under-par 73-70--$143 at Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club in Georgetown.

Thelen earned $590 for the Senior Division win and $300 for the overall victory.

Ron Schroeder of Montgomery posted a score of 77-71—148 for second place in the Senior Division. Schroeder won $460 for his efforts, while amateur Owen Joyner of Spring finished in third place at 77-73—150 and took him a $340 merchandise certificate.

Another amateur took the top spot in the Super Senior Division (ages 58-65). James Long of Granbury, Texas, carded a total of 81-75—156 to win that group and take a $620 merchandise certificate. Senior Series veterans David Narveson of Simonton and Wayne Mitchell of San Antonio finished close behind Long, Narveson going 79-78—157 and Mitchell 77-89—157 for a second place tie and $430 each in winnings.

Marty Fleckman of Cypress opened the 2011 schedule with a win in the tournament’s Veteran Division (ages 66 and up), with a 75-80—155 total earning Fleckman the top spot and a $510 check.

San Antonio’s Bob Hullender took the Veterans group’s runner-up spot with a score of 77-82—159 for $340 in winnings. TR Jones of The Woodlands finished third at 84-79—163 and won $270.
