Spend the Open Championship with John Daly

His drunken escapades are as legendary as his mammoth drives. If you really follow golf, surely you've heard about John Daly's self-destructive partying and the harrowing path he has taken from his greatest moments, the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 Open Championship victories, to his current status as an outsider to the PGA Tour relying on the kindness of strangers (sponsors' exemptions) to find his way into tournaments.

Daly's vices have hurt his career a great deal, but for all of the money he has wasted on women, booze and gambling, perhaps golf's most lovable figure has always found a way to give back to those less fortunate than he. 

In an effort to raise funds for the Clinical Education Complex at Western Kentucky University and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Daly is auctioning off the opportunity to travel with him to the 2009 British Open at Turnberry in a private jet, spend the week with him in a private villa, play a round with him at the Open site and score clubhouse passes to the highest bidder.

“Having won an Open, I’ve got a little bit of sway and can get them some passes for the actual tournament that should get them pretty much everywhere except the player’s locker room,” said Daly in a recent interview. “I’ll be working, and they’ll get a chance to see how hard it really is out there. We’ll have a good time too. We’ll have some cookouts where I can tell them stories about my life in golf and all my buddies and hopefully make a really great trip for them.”

Forget the private jet, the private villa, the golf and the clubhouse passes, I want to hear John Daly’s stories. Hearing what has actually transpired throughout Daly’s career would be like seeing Sasquatch or catching a glimpse of the Lochness Monster. I want to hear if he actually took one of those giant checks they hand you after a tournament, you know the ones Happy Gilmore put in the back of his car, and flew to Vegas and lost it all.

Bids can be submitted at www.charityfolks.com. The current high bid is $13,000. Bids must be made in increments of $1,000.

The trip is for three people and in an ironic twist, all three must submit background checks. Really? A background check to hang out with John Daly? Isn’t that like having to give a urine sample to party backstage with Motley Crue?

The auction ends a week from today, Tuesday, Oct. 14.
