That crazy Quaker William Penn and his ilk were a
peace-loving people, and upon settling in Pennsylvania's largest modern-day
population center, they envisioned it as a place where folks of all different
creeds and colors could co-exist in harmonious accord. Penn's intentions led to
Philadelphia earning the nickname, "The City of Brotherly Love."
There was no such thing on Wednesday afternoon at the city's Cobb's Creek Golf Club, site of the first public golf course in the Greater Philadelphia area that today houses 36 holes of golf. A sibling golf outing turned unruly, leading to a busted nose and an arrest warrant.
Philly.com, a subsidiary of the Philadelphia Daily News reported that an on-course dispute escalated when the older of two brothers forcibly boarded a golf cart driven by his younger brother, greeted him with an elbow to the mouth and then proceeded to finish the job by assaulting him with a golf club. The police officer of record told the paper he wasn't sure what type of club it was.
"The younger brother, who had paid for the round (which costs about $30 at mid-day), expressed anger for his siblings' behavior and tried to leave by himself in a golf cart, the report stated. The older brother jumped on the cart, elbowed his brother in the face, then hit him in the nose with a golf club.
"The injured brother, who lives in Swedesboro, N.J., was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment."
While this incident is laughable and much less serious than previous black eyes inflicted upon the city this year by its sports fans and participants (beating death outside of Citizens Bank Park, Flyers Knife Fight), it once again reminds everyone just how Philadelphia continues to earn itself the reputation as a town of angry, blue collar goons who enthusiastically cheer a winner, violently boo a loser and settle disputes the old-fashioned way.
