Construction began on Maxwelton Golf Club in 1928 with it opening officially in 1930. The course was built by a Scottish immigrant, the name itself comes from an old Scottish ballad titled "Maxwelton by the Sea."

Much of the work was done by hand with teams of mules being used to shape the greens. This accounts for the small greens and the severe sloping surrounding the greens. The small greens place an emphasis on approach shots and offer quite a contrast to many courses.

Maxwelton's Scottish influence can be seen in its design which has an inside nine running counter-clockwise and an outside nine running clockwise. The most famous example of this is the great Murfield Course in Scotland.
