Southern Dunes - The ideal place to play the game and practice it

Southern Dunes - The ideal place to play the game...and practice itFor the past eight years, Southern Dunes has been one of the top places to play golf in Central Indiana, due to recent improvements and additions, the facility is now the ideal place to improve your game as well.

In addition to an acclaimed 18-hole Gary Player-designed championship golf course, Southern Dunes boasts one of the region’s finest indoor and outdoor practice facilities and a quality 9-hole par-3 course that provides the perfect setting for working on mid-length and short-game fundamentals that are so important to the game.

Whether inside or out, Southern Dunes is truly a Central Indiana golf facility that operates year-round. During cold months or on rainy days, Southern Dunes offers three indoor simulators as well as an indoor putting green. The facility also boasts an outdoor driving range that has been transformed from an aqua range to a fully-grassed one and offers several heated hitting bays.

Southern Dunes also features two certified PGA instructors – Brian Garrett and fellow pro Michael Zedrick III. “We are a 365 days a year facility,” said Garrett, Southern Dunes head golf professional.

The par-3 nine hole facility at Southern Dunes is a popular venue for strengthen the short game, but it’s anything but a typical short course. In fact, combined the nine holes stretch to more than 1,500 yards from the back, providing plenty of opportunities to work on long irons in addition to the wedges and putters.

“It’s really not a pitch and putt course,” Garrett said. “It’s really challenging.”

It’s also very affordable due to single day and annual packages made available at Southern Dunes. The course offers a $20 “all day pass” that includes several buckets of large golf balls and all-day play access on the par-3 course. Additionally, Southern Dunes features a $275 annual pass to the all the practice facilities. For $325 all-year, unlimited access to the par-3 course is added.

“It’s a strong program when you think about getting the par-3 course added for only $50 more dollars,” Garrett said. “It really is a no brainer.”

Taking your game from the practice facility to the 18-hole championship course is equally a no-brainer. The only Gary Player design in metro Indianapolis, Southern Dunes was crafted in an American Links style and is defi ned by its mounding, abundance of water and wellmanicured greens. Certainly a strong challenge from the back tees, Southern Dunes features five sets of tees, allowing golfers to comfortably take on as much of the course as they wish. Among those tees are two that are rated for women golfers.

Among its unique features, Southern Dunes offers six par-3s, and 12 lakes throughout the design, although few forced carries are required from the middle and forward tees.

Southern Dunes“The course plays longer than it seems but it is certainly playable for golfers of all levels,” Garrett said.

The front nine at Southern Dunes is highlighted by the 553-yard par-5 seventh hole. A classic risk-reward hole, the seventh features water down the entire right side of the hole. Golfer’s looking to attack the green on the second shot must take on more of the water off the tee to position the ball for a long-iron approach shot. Conservative players will favor the left side of the fairways making the hole play a true three-shot par-5.

The inward nine is highlighted by one of the six par-3s, the 194-yard 18th hole. From the two back tees, this scenic hole requires an approach over water to a three-section green that features guarding the middle and right side of the tees. From the forward tees, golfers are spared the full carry over water, but it is still very much in play. See a right-hand pin from the tee, and strongly consider favoring the left and go the route of a long putt for birdie.

Southern Dunes Golf Course also features a fullservice bar and grill and a complete pro shop in the spacious clubhouse and is a favorite for charity and corporate outings.
