Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory

Open through 2010

“Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory” is the featured exhibition at the Hall of Fame throughout 2010. The exhibit features rich storytelling, vintage photography and rare video, alongside 400 artifacts and hundreds of photos (the largest collection of Hope memorabilia ever placed on public display) that represent Hope’s broad range of talents— from vaudeville to entertaining troops—and naturally, his passion for the game of golf. Guests first experience a video presentation in the specially created Bob Hope Theater featuring some of his best-known golf stand up and skits as well as tributes from some of the game’s most recognizable personalities. This feature is narrated by fellow Hall of Fame member and good friend, Arnold Palmer.

Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory From there, the exhibition winds guests through a variety of set pieces designed to reflect the different eras and locations significant to his life, including Cleveland, New York, Hollywood, Palm Springs, Washington D.C. and sites of USO shows around the world. In each set, stories covering a broad range of topics are revealed, including the special relationship he shared with his wife Dolores, with whom he regularly played golf, as well as his achievements in live entertainment, radio, television, books and movies throughout eight decades of the 20th century. “Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory” offers insight into the close friendships Hope shared with Hall of Fame members, celebrities and United States Presidents over the years. It also looks at the impact Hope made as a fervent entertainer of the men and women of the United States Military, which was validated in 1997 when he became the first person in American history to be named an Honorary Veteran. The exhibit also looks at the various ways he championed the game, including the development and hosting of the PGA TOUR’s Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Throughout “Shanks,” guests can see how golf was interwoven throughout every facet of Hope's life—both personal and professional. While having admitted to playing 2,000 golf courses around the world—often with celebrities, professionals and presidents—Hope’s affection for golf went beyond playing, making an impact as an author, promoter, sponsor and educator of the game.

World Golf Hall of FameA special audio tour is a highlight of the exhibit, giving guests the opportunity to hear Hope recount various important events in his life, as well as the voices of his family and friends—including Hall of Fame members and presidents—sharing stories and tributes to the comedian in over 30 specific locations throughout the exhibit.
