Rio Secco and Cascata Golf Clubs

Designed and built by world-renowned golf course architect and designer Rees Jones, Rio Secco Golf Club is a natural masterpiece — a golf experience intertwined with stunning desert scenery and awe-inspiring city views at the foothills of the Black M untain range, just 13.5 miles southeast of the famous Las Vegas Strip.

Shortly after opening in 1997, Rio Secco was deluged with awards and accolades. Among them, Golf Digest and Golf Magazine both voted it one of the top-10 new courses of the year. In 2003/2004, Golf Digest named Rio Secco one of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses, while the Las Vegas PGA membership poll rated it the No. 1 Public Access Course in Nevada.

Elevated 800 feet above Las Vegas, Rio Secco offers panoramic views of the city below and the surrounding mountains. Playing to over 7,400 yards, Rio Secco can prove difficult for some golfers. By offering four teeing grounds, however, Rio Secco allows golfers of any skill level a memorable golf experience. Players are challenged as the golf course winds its way through steep canyons and arroyos before climbing to the top of a high plateau. Range, tee and golf course hosts are made available to attend to each player’s needs. Each guest may purchase a yardage book to guide them through their round with tips and insights from designer Rees Jones and Butch Harmon, who operates a prestigious school of golf on-site.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s top golf instructors, Butch Harmon currently instructs many of the top touring professionals and was the former golf coach of Tiger Woods, who holds the Rio Secco course record (64). Rio Secco Golf Club is the proud home of the Butch Harmon School of Golf.

Indoor and outdoor practice facilities, a 90-yard short game hole, and state-of-the-art video and computer equipment help instruct players and improve their game. One- and three-day classes with Butch Harmon and his staff of golf professionals are available. Limited class size guarantees hands-on, personal attention for every student. Regardless of your ability or level of experience, the Butch Harmon School of Golf will improve your game!

Many golf school packages are offered. All packages include accommodations, video and computerized analysis, nine-holes of golf at Rio Secco Golf Club and lunch on each day of instruction. Private instruction is also available by appointment.

Overlooking the seventh, eighth and ninth holes of the golf course and nestled amidst million-dollar private estates, the 30,000 square-foot, European-style Rio Secco clubhouse offers an inviting respite adorned in natural stone and dark woods. A 2,000 square-foot golf shop within the clubhouse offers the latest in apparel and accessories. The clubhouse restaurant, Janelas, treats guests to fabulous lunches and special events.

Known for exemplary customer service and course conditioning — often to PGA Tour standards — Rio Secco boasts some of the best greens in the West. Given Rio Secco’s acclaim, don’t be surprised to see celebrities playing the course or taking the lessons of a lifetime at the Butch Harmon School of Golf.

Boulder City, Nevada

Not one to rest on his laurels, Rees Jones designed Cascata in the years immediately following Rio Secco’s debut. Just 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, near historic Boulder City, lies an enclave of golf like no other. Until recently, it was reserved exclusively for the rich and famous. But, like a good family recipe, some things are just too good not to share with the world.

Now open to the public, Cascata offers a game like no other, where your experience is not only measured by the number of strokes you take, but by the moments that take your breath away. Italian for “waterfall,” Cascata is aptly named. A 418-foot waterfall flows from the steep mountainside, tumbling over mammoth boulders and cascading into a river that roars right through the clubhouse, eventually culminating in a tranquil stream.

As you soak in the picturesque mountain vistas and hear that waterfall roaring through the opulent clubhouse, one thing becomes immediately apparent: Cascata has no equal. It’s no wonder Sports Illustrated called Cascata, “golf’s hidden treasure.”

Your tour commences at Hole #1 — a short, but challenging 367-yard, uphill par four that requires a well-placed tee shot between the large fairway bunker on the right and the creek on the left. This leaves a short-iron second shot onto an elevated green. Be careful: the false front punishes shots that fall short, so you would be wise to play for the middle of the green. Watch out! The fast green slopes from back to front and anything long will face an up-and-down battle for par.

On to the 157-yard seventh hole. This wonderful downhill par three is one of the most picturesque holes at Cascata, with a dramatic waterfall as its backdrop. An accurate tee shot is a must, with water short and left and a canyon wall and bunker on the right. The choice of club off the tee will depend on the pin placement on this deep green, which has a large ridge running across its middle. Anything left above the hole is likely to be extremely fast.

You’ve made it to the back nine. Now it’s time to take on the 434-yard 14th, a dogleg right par-4 where water is always in play. A driver down the right side leaves a short approach shot, but anything missed to the right will end up wet. The percentage play is a fairway wood or long-iron to the middle of the fairway, leaving a mid-iron shot onto the wide green protected by water, bunkers and desert.

The final hole at Cascata, a 559-yard par-five, offers the opportunity for a birdie finish, but players must successfully navigate the water hazard running the length of the hole as well as the desert. Depending on the winds, it can be reached in two with a long-carrying drive over the large rock formation on the left that avoids the creek and the desert. The safe play is a modest drive left of the sand trap and a middle-iron second shot. The fairway slopes toward the water, so the second shot must be played well left. The undulating green will leave players with a challenging finish to their round of golf.

All throughout Cascata, the par-72 course provides stunning vistas at every turn, including the 3,600-foot peak at Red Mountain, lush fairways, lakes and streams. Class A PGA professionals attend to equipment, fashion or instruction needs, while players on the course are accompanied by Tour-class caddies. Off the course, players will find much to enjoy and service second to none.

Within the 37,000 square-foot clubhouse, guests will discover an Old World ambiance of unpretentious luxury, where every need is happily obliged by attentive staff members. Guests can savor appetizing fare in the dining room, or visit the cigar lounge’s custom-designed humidor stocked with an extensive collection of rare and fine tobaccos. Separate men’s and ladies’ lounges are equipped with every conceivable amenity, including sink-side, flat-screen TVs. Also found inside the clubhouse, the golf shop at Cascata carries an array of must-have equipment and stylish apparel and accessories.

Celebrated as one of the finest designs in the world, Cascata offers a unique combination of privacy, luxury and uncompromising service for an unforgettable golf experience.
