Great Bear Golf Club Honored by Golf Digest

POCONO MOUNTAINS, Pennsylvania - The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau has announced that Great Bear Golf Course & Country Club has been named one of Pennsylvania's best golf courses in Golf Digest Magazine's biennial ranking of the "America's Greatest Courses State by State 2007-08."

The Jack Nicklaus design - stretching to more than 7,000 yards from the tips and featuring five sets of tees - was rated No. 19 out of approximately 700 courses in Pennsylvania by Golf Digest raters.

Golf Digest's biennial best-in-state rankings are determined by the magazine's course rating panelists, a group of more than 800 low-handicap golfers who rated thousands of courses across the United States on a 10-point scale in various criteria to come up with the best courses in each state. There are roughly 17,000 golf courses in the country.

"Great Bear Golf & Country Club being recognized by Golf Digest raters is a well-deserved honor for this beautiful, challenging course and further evidence of the many quality golf options in the Pocono Mountains," says Robert Uguccioni, executive director of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau. "With great courses like Great Bear and myriad other options in every price range, or to fit any skill level, it's time to discover golf in the Pocono Mountains."

In addition to the Nicklaus design, classic architects Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast are also represented in the Pocono Mountains. A popular destination for vacationers for generations, the Pocono Mountains have undergone a reinvention over the last few years with new and renovated courses and additional offerings for the entire family. The four-county region is an ideal spot for families to reconnect and relax in an authentic mountain setting.

Great Bear made the transition to a private facility this season. The course had been open to the public since being introduced to Northeastern Pennsylvania's mountain destination in 1997 and will remain available to non-club-member golf groups of 32 or more on Mondays and Tuesdays as well for those who have booked events such as a banquets or weddings.
