Buck's Run - Simply Gorgeous Celebrating Its 10th Anniversary

Finishing holes of each nine are especially memorable. The 9th and 18th are gradual dogleg holes that embrace the combination of water, green expanse and design challenge.Buck's Run, which opened in 2000 and this year celebrates its exciting 10th anniversary, is located in the heart of Michigan. As a neighbor to Central Michigan University and Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, it serves as a 290-acre living testament to the rolling, dramatic land the glaciers carved so long ago.

Michigan’s own internationally renown Jerry Matthews, the state’s most prolific golf course architect and designer, considers his natural golf creation an example of his award-winning firm’s best work.

Awards have been frequent the last decade. Golf Digest has Buck’s Run ranked with 4 1/2 stars, and the most recent calling card is a No. 30 ranking in the United States among Golf World’s 2010 “Public Places to Play”.

The golf course, all 6,756 yards, was created on the site of a former stone quarry, surrounds stunning Fisher Lake with five golf holes and incorporates the views and challenges created by two ponds and the Chippewa River in its sparkling setting.

Dramatic elevation changes, rock outcroppings and manicured bent grass add to the visual overload of the challenge at hand. Bring 14 clubs and a camera.

Four sets of tees await the golfer to help them match the length and level of challenge they hope to take on with the level of their game.

Water is everywhere, but serves as a beautiful backdrop as often as it is a hazard. Stunning stands of trees are frequent and natural grass areas frame and seemingly follow the holes in hand-holding harmony.

From the front tee positions Matthews was careful not to force impossible shots, and likewise from the back tee positions he created a strong challenge. Fairways and greens are generous in size in some spots, and yet natural to the terrain and make the set-up of the course flexible and ever-changing.

Buck’s Run offers golf variety and often requires thoughtful play. Golfers walk off that final hole usually wanting more, and things can get settled on the par-54, 18-hole island putting course. This is the rare real putting course, too, not of the putt-putt variety. It’s a true test of putting, and truly fun.

It’s simply gorgeous at Buck’s Run, and the stylish clubhouse that measures 18,000-square-feet sets the tone with a professionally designed and equipped pro shop, the Quarry Grill and Banquet Hall, which seats 250 people, and a private gathering room upstairs with the latest amenities.

Jeff Sweet, the superintendent and general manager, offers an impeccable course condition. “Jeff takes great pride in the condition of the course, and we always hear great feedback,” Conklin says. “The entire facility here is really impeccable.”

Pete Lieber is the executive chef, and the dining is part of the reason many golfers seemingly stay from sunrise to sunset. Check out the verandah that overlooks the golf course. “Everything comes together here,” Conklin says.
