Marsh Ridge Golf Course and Resort

Remember the electric shaver salesman who said he “liked the product so much he bought the company.” Larry Bowden feels the same way about Marsh Ridge Golf Course and Resort just outside Gaylord. He’s been in the development business for 30 years and always loved the famed resort, its lodges and opportunities to create a condominium community second to none. He finally bought the lodging portion last summer and is in the process of, in his words “taking it back to its glory days” as one of Northern Michigan’s most desired golf and resort locations.

The golf course is a short-on-yardage but long-on-exquisite-views par-71 designed by Mike Husby to take full advantage of the northern Michigan terrain. With the negotiation of; a 60-foot drop at the par-3 second, a narrow green at the short par-5 third, a two-tiered green at the fourth, a narrower-than-usual par-4 fifth, distance on the drive at six, a blind tee shot over water at seven, an all-carry shot at the par-3 eighth and bunkers galore at the ninth, Husby throws just about every kind of challenge to your game on the front nine alone. The back side has an extra par-3 just to remind you of the spectacular panoramic views. Besides the elevation changes from hills to wetlands, you’ll be struck by the awesome beauty of the native trees that separate every fairway and you’re likely to see an assortment of foxes, deer and other northland critters.

As for a place to get away from it all, Marsh Ridge offers not only quaint guestrooms for couples on a short-term getaways, to rooms in one of the Scandinavian-style lodges that sleep up to 10 or 12, to the feature that Bowden’s most excited about, vacation condominiums you can own without many of the responsibilities of home ownership. Some of the fully-renovated condos have golf views, some have wooded views, some you can still customize to your tastes with prices starting in the $165,000-range with a management program to help with rentals and maintenance. Talk to Larry about it next time you’re eating at Marsh Ridge’s fabulous restaurant, Jac’s Place.
