Hutchison's 65 Good for second round Michigan Open Lead

Randy HutchisonWASHINGTON, MI - A couple of eagles pushed long-hitting Randy Hutchison into the second round lead at the Michigan Open presented by Lincoln and DTE Energy. Hutchison of Traverse City is now 10-under par after shooting a second round 7-under par 65 and has a two-stroke lead over Matt Thompson of Battle Creek.

“I hit 17-greens in regulation,” Hutchison said. “It was a pretty crazy day.” The MSU graduate and Hooter’s Tour Player shot a 3-under 69 in the first round. “I didn’t putt that much better today, I just hit it closer.” Hutchison carded his eagles on the 577-yard third hole and the 538-yard 6th hole. “That ten footer for eagle on 6 was the longest putt I had all day.”

Hutchison has a 2-stroke lead over Andrew Ruthkoski, the 2007 winner and Matthew Thompson who plays for the University of Michigan.

The wind kicked up in the afternoon long after Hutchison’s round was completed and Ruthkoski was on the course. Ruthkoski started on number 10 and shot even on the back nine. His game turned around when he made the turn. The Muskegon native made up 4-strokes over a span of 3-holes. “The front nine feels like you are more covered and that makes it easier to control the ball.” The 28-year old Hooter’s Tour player finished with a bogey free 30 on the front for a second round total of 6-under 66.

Thompson was happy to put himself into position to win after carding his 66 in the morning phase. Getting himself “into a position to win” was his “main thing” Tuesday. “Hopefully I’ll be able to pull it off,” the U-M junior said.

First round leader, Brian Cairns, a 47-year old Teaching Professional at Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center shot par 72 and finds himself 6-shots back.

Two time defending champion, Ryan Brehm is tied for fifth, 5-shots back with rounds of 70-72 142.

This is the 94th Michigan Open. There is a $70,000 purse with a $10,000 share for the winner. The Orchards is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design with many national awards under its belt. The golf course is located on a 525-acre residential community. The course rating is 74.5 with a slope of 136 from the championship tees. 72 players made the cut.
