Lorena Ochoa to Play in 2009 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic

Lorena OchoaTOLEDO, Ohio - Lorena Ochoa, the world's No. 1 ranked women’s golfer announced her 2009 playing schedule this week and it includes the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic presented by Kroger. This year’s tournament will be held the week of June 29th - July 5th at Highland Meadows Golf Club, marking the “25th Anniversary” of the tournament.

Some of Ochoa’s top accomplishments include being named the LPGA Player of the Year, leading money winner and Vare Trophy winner each of the last three seasons. Her 2008 earnings topped $2.7 million vaulted her career earnings to more than $13 million since her rookie season in 2003. Ochoa won seven times in 2008, including her second major championship at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. 

“This is great news for our sponsors, volunteers and the great golf fans of northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan,” said Tournament Director Judd Silverman. “With Lorena’s announcement that she will be playing in this year’s JFOCC coupled with defending champion Paula Creamer’s commitment we now have the Nos. 1 and 2 players from last year’s LPGA money list. I can’t think of a better way to kick off our 25th anniversary.

“Lorena’s play over the last three years has been phenomenal. She has won 20 tournaments including two majors.  That’s an incredible accomplishment,” Silverman concluded.

The 2009 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic will offer a purse of $1.4 million, an increase of $100,000 from a year ago.  The final three rounds of the tournament will once again be nationally televised by ESPN2.   

With the help and support of 1,500 volunteers, 400 local businesses and thousands of area golf fans, the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic has donated over $6.2 million to 110 northwest Ohio Children’s Charities since its inception in 1984.
