Mediate, Austin Among Latest Commitments for 2009 Buick Open

Rocco MediateGRAND BLANC - Rocco Mediate, Brian Bateman, Woody Austin, Charles Howell III and Chris DiMarco are among the latest players to commit to the 2009 Buick Open to be held Monday-Sunday, July 27-August 2 at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan.

Defending champion Kenny Perry leads the field that includes a total of eight former Buick Open champions, including: Mediate (2000), Bateman (2007), Jim Furyk (2003), Tom Pernice Jr. (1999), Justin Leonard (1996), Brad Faxon (1991) and Scott Verplank (1988). Howell finished tied for 17th at the 2008 Buick Open, and DiMarco has tied for second twice at the tournament (2001 & 2003). On the PGA Tour so far this season, Howell has posted three Top 10 finishes and DiMarco has earned a place in the Top 25 three times.

Last year at the Michigan tournament, Perry polished off a round of 66 that left him tied for the lead at 19 under, with the fate of the tournament title resting on the putters of Austin and Bubba Watson. Austin three-putted for bogey and Watson was unable to birdie the 72nd hole to tie, making Perry the 2008 Buick Open champion.

“The Buick Open has always delivered some breath-catching moments in golf, and 2008 was no exception,” said Larry Peck, national promotions manager for Buick-GMC. “With the field shaping up like it is, we can only expect another stellar year to watch at the Buick Open.”

The 2009 Buick Open field will compete for a record $5.1 million purse, including a $918,000 first prize.
