Whitmore to Direct New Northern Michigan Golf Academy

PGA Professional Kevin WhitmoreCHARLEVOIX - PGA professional Kevin Whitmore, who earned a sterling reputation running some of the most popular upscale public and private clubs in Northern Michigan, is the director of the new Northern Michigan Golf Academy at Dunmaglas Golf Course.

The move to Dunmaglas reunites Whitmore with Darin Philport, the former vice president of operations at the Hidden River Golf & Casting Club in Brutus, where Whitmore served as the general manager and head golf professional.

Prior to Hidden River, Whitmore held a similar position at the Red Hawk Golf Club in East Tawas and the Gaylord Country Club.

For just over a year he was director of golf at the semi-private True North Golf Club in Harbor Springs.

“I am very happy to bring 18 years of experience and the Northern Michigan Golf Academy to Dunmaglas, one of the outstanding golf courses in the north,” Whitmore said. “It is truly one of the most scenic and finest golf courses in the region.”

Philport said he was delighted to welcome Whitmore and his impressive resume to Dunmaglas.

“Establishing the Northern Michigan Golf Academy is another step in our commitment to provide golfers with the best experiences in the game when they come to Dunmaglas,” Philport said.

Whitmore said the new academy will foster an unpretentious learning environment to help golf fans enjoy the game to its fullest.

“My teaching philosophy has always been very simple: I work with my students individually to come up with the most efficient and effective golf swing possible for that particular player,” Whitmore said. “With the Northern Michigan Golf Academy it is my aim to bring affordable, quality golf instruction to players of all ages and abilities, we will have a big focus on teaching juniors as they are the key to the future of this great game.”

The new academy will offer lesions in all aspects of the game including full swing, putting, short game, course management and the mental aspects of the game that produces the best results.

Whitmore pointed out that Dunmaglas’ location is ideal for the golf school on the outskirts of Charlevoix and within minutes Petoskey, Bay Harbor and Boyne City.

When Dunmaglas opened in 1992, it was acclaimed for its natural beauty and its penal play. Since taking over the club two years ago, Philport has renovated the layout to make it a much more playable and a more enjoyable experience.

New tees were added, greens were softened, and the fairways and rough were widened. More than 50 bunkers were removed along with brush and trees that interfered with play. The course is now one of the best conditioned tracks in Northern Michigan.

The 6,897-yard course plays through 886 acres of severe hills and rolling meadow with views of views of Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix in the distance. Dunmaglas was rated in the Top 50 upscale courses in America in 1998 by Golf Digest magazine. For more information, visit www.dunmaglas.com.
