Yurik is GAM Women’s Champion

FORT GRATIOT – Gabrielle Yurik battled from behind on the back nine to win the 21st GAM Women’s Championship at Port Huron Golf Club Tuesday afternoon.

Yurik (Oakland/Michigan State University) led after Monday’s first round but faltered on the front nine of the second round and Liz Nagel take the lead.

“It was very difficult today,” said Yurik. “I lost the lead completely after the first nine and it was a fight on the back nine to get it back. I just had some wayward iron shots and approach shots and that resulted in me not getting up and down.”

Yurik finished with a 71-73-144; runner-up Nagel 73-72-145. Yurik drew on her experience playing for Stoney Creek High School in last year’s state finals to keep pressing her opponent. Nagel (DeWitt/Michigan State University), she says, was playing very well so it was important that Yurik not get discouraged.

“I went through a similar situation last year in the state finals when I was down by four strokes and came back on the last day,” said Yurik. “I’m always aware of the score and of what is going on and I think that helps me to stay on course.”

Christine Meier (Rochester/University of Michigan) and Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville) tied for third place.
