2011 Patriot Golf Day

2011 Patriot Golf DayPatriot Golf Day was again a huge success for the Carolinas PGA Section. Over 400 of the facilities in the section held events at their courses to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Folds of Honor Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides scholarships to children and dependents of the men and women who have been disabled or killed during military action. Patriot Golf Day was started five years ago by Major Dan Rooney, PGA, as the primary fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation. Over 2,000 scholarships have been awarded since the event began.

When Patriot Golf day first started the intention was to have PGA Professionals add $1 to their greens fees during Labor Day weekend. Over the past few years PGA Professionals and courses have taken it upon themselves to get more creative with the events they are hosting. These events have not only increased donations; they have also allowed golfers all over the country to get more involved.

As of mid-September courses are still sending their total donations in, but the Carolinas PGA Section is on track to top last year’s tally of $250,000 that was raised.

Bill Sampson, PGA, Head Golf Professional at Spring Island Club played a 144-hole golf marathon to raise money and awareness for the Folds of Honor Foundation. Sampson made 15 birdies during the day, including his final two holes with a crowd of fans cheering him on. Over $20,000 was raised from Sampson’s efforts.

CCL Head PGA Professional, Sara BushThe golf professionals at The Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., collected over $21,000 in donations during Patriot Golf Day by playing a combined total of 508 holes between five professionals. Each professional tied a red, white or blue ribbon on the tee flags after finishing the hole. “We set out to create an event to draw our members in to Patriot Golf Day and watching them follow along as we played and the significant dollars we raised, I think we can be proud of what we achieved.” said CCL Head PGA Professional Sara Bush.

Burroughs & Chapin Golf Management facilities of Myrtle Beach, SC raised $35,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation. Over the past four years, the group has raised over $120,000. Although donations are still coming in, the facility that collected the most donations last year in the Carolinas Section, The Country Club of Sapphire Valley, led by PGA professional Kelly Childs, has already surpassed the $35,000 mark for 2011.

The Carolinas Section is extremely proud of the efforts by each of their professionals.
