Field Set For 81st Annual Amateur Championship

The Palmetto State’s finest amateur golfers will seek the state’s most prestigious title in the South Carolina Golf Association’s Amateur Championship Aug. 2-5 at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

The 81st edition of the State Amateur, a 72-hole test over the venerable Spartanburg layout that will play at 6,573 yards and par 70, again will feature a youth versus experience theme.

Thirty-four members of the 132-player field are under 20 years old, and four of the past five champions have come from the college-age crowd.

Coming into this year’s championship, Thomas Bradshaw, a rising junior at Clemson, has won the Rice Planters Invitation, finished second in the North and South Amateur and is looking for his first South Carolina Amateur Championship title after finishing in the top 10 last year.

Winthrop’s Brandon Truesdale recently qualified for the USGA Amateur Championship and, along with college teammate Walt Todd, won the 2012 SCGA Four Ball Championship.

Clemson’s Michael Muscatell also qualified for the USGA Amateur after shooting a tournament low final-round 66 at the Colleton River Plantation’s Dye Course in Bluffton.

The “Youth Movement” includes junior golfers who have not reached college age.

Carson Young, who will be a senior at Pendleton High this fall, has experienced a sizzling summer by winning the SCJGA’s Blade Junior Golf Classic, CGA’s Amateur Championship and the South Carolina Junior Boys Match Play Title.

Other junior golfers who could make an impact in this year’s championship are Cody Proveaux from Leesville, who will enroll at Clemson this fall, and Austin Langdale of Townville, Young’s high school teammate.

Proveaux, the 2011 AJGA Player of the year, has a long list of wins that include the 2010 Polo Junior Classic and the 2011 Junior PGA Championship.

Langdale won the 2011 SCGA Junior title and finished tied for second at this year’s SCJGA Blade Junior Classic and at the CGA’s South Carolina Junior Match Play. Young and Langdale have committed to join Proveaux at Clemson in 2013.

The veterans will continue to show the importance of experience, and several come into the 72-hole tournament playing well. Matt Laydon of Charleston looks to continue a solid 2012 after winning this year’s CGA South Carolina Match Play Championship and finishing second in the SCGA Four Ball Championship.

Robert Dargan and Chris Mitchell, both of Columbia, also look to continue with their strong years. Dargan tied for fourth in the SCGA Partner’s Championship but has won three Championships this year including the SCGA Trescott Championship, the SCGA Lefthander-Righthander Championship, and won the SCGA Lefthander’s Championship.

Mitchell has tied for second in the SCGA Partner’s Championship, the CGA Match Play Championship, and the SCGA Four Ball Championship. Laydon currently leads in the SCGA Player of the Year standings with Mitchell third and Dargan fourth.

Rick Cloninger, who is currently leading the SCGA Senior Player of the year, is looking to add the South Carolina Amateur Championship to his impressive career resume which includes playing in the U.S. Amateur, the U.S. Mid-Amateur, the U.S. Senior Open, and representing three different states the in USGA State Team Matches.

The trend of college-age champions began with Charles Warren in 1997 and the list includes current PGA Tour pros Lucas Glover (three titles), D.J. Trahan (two) and Bill Haas (one).

Austin Reeves, the 2011 champion who played at Furman, and Drew Ernst, the 2010 winner who played at Coastal Carolina, have turned professional. Former South Carolina Amateur Champions competing this year are Bill Smunk (1984), Todd White (1990), Bert Atkinson (1991 & 1995),Taylor Hough (1993), Lee Palms (2008).

The Country Club of Spartanburg, founded in 1908, will play host to the tournament for the fourth time and the course will be set up at approximately 6,573 yards and play to par of 70.

The course, which features characteristics used by famed architect Donald Ross, was recently restored by Kris Spence. The field will be cut to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes. The last time the South Carolina Amateur was held at the Country Club of Spartanburg was in 1959, and legendary South Carolina amateur golfer Dillard Traynham won his first of two South Carolina Amateur Championships.

The Amateur Championship is one of 19 SCGA statewide championships, 75 one-day contests, eight USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and five special events conducted by the SCGA.
