Bonita Bay East - A Double Dose of Fazio for the Daily-Fee Golfer

What distinguishes Tom Fazio from his peers?
Bonita Bay East - A Double Dose of Fazio for the Daily-Fee GolferThe North Carolina-based architect has a portfolio that includes nearly 200 projects – originals and remakes. But it’s not the quantity of courses in play that places Fazio at the pinnacle of his profession; it’s the quality of his work. He has more courses ranked on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses and Golfweek’s collection of America’s Best than any other living designer.

Southwest Florida’s Bonita Bay East is a double dose of Fazio.
Arranged to accentuate the natural elements of the existing landscape that features cypress wetlands, slash-pine forests and expansive lakes, the sister Cypress and Sabal courses create an exhilarating 36-hole, pure golf experience.

To the delight of public golfers everywhere, Bonita Bay East became more “available” in the spring of 2010. The nonresidential facility that opened as a private club in 1997 has updated its status to read – We now welcome daily-fee play. If you’ve been waiting patiently to place your name on the tee sheet at one of the Sunshine State’s most sought after golf clubs, the wait is over. Setting the Stage for Spectacular Golf
The magical make-up of Bonita Bay East is a product of environment and artistry merging with uncommon ease. Using an unspoiled natural setting of 1,400 acres that depicted Florida as it stood a century ago, Tom Fazio was able to use his vast knowledge to sculpt an unforgettable pair of originals.

Fazio’s recall not only includes the spectacular courses he’s built himself; it includes the majestic layouts he enjoys playing. A single-digit handicap, Fazio annually visits sacred grounds like Pinehurst, Pine Valley and Seminole. The secret to unlocking great golf is having immersed yourself in great golf for dozens of years. At Bonita Bay East, site and experience combined to create something truly breathtaking.

The Cypress

“Bonita Bay East’s large-scale acreage and variety of vegetation gave us unlimited opportunity to mold, shape and form one of the finest golf complexes in the United States,” Fazio said. “The outstanding site allowed us to create a different playing experience and views on every hole while maintaining, and in many cases, enhancing, the environmental integrity of the property.”

Swing for the pin at The Cypress, the longest of Bonita Bay East’s championship designs. Spacious fairways on the front side give way to encroaching forests from the 10th hole forward. Nature is both an imposing obstacle and majestic backdrop as each nine-hole loop poses its own unique challenges. Tee placements give The Cypress an impressive range from 5,999 to 7,077 yards.

Expect the unexpected at the slightly shorter Sabal course. Stretching to 7,038 yards, this design is built for beginners and veterans alike as they take on broad open fairways and circle the water on holes 9 through 12. Competitive golfers will be tempted to shoot at pins and capture a score well below par. The Sabal promises an ever changing and unique round of golf.

The Sabal

“The Sabal and Cypress courses are a departure from more contemporary configurations, with elevation changes and uphill and downhill play,” Fazio explained. “Five tee areas allow golfers to choose markers appropriate to their game, and knolls, ridges, undulations and lakes create a game of strategy for all players.”

Adding to the allure of Fazio’s dual designs is the environmental excellence that’s been achieved. Both The Sabal and The Cypress have been designated as Audubon Signature Sanctuary courses. In fact Bonita Bay East was the first 36-hole facility in the world to gain Audubon Signature Sanctuary standing. The site is full of natural wonders including 895 acres of cypress wetlands, 190 acres of pine flats and hundreds of native sabal palms.

Part Landmark, Part Resort
Peaking just above the tree line of the cypress stands, Florida slash pines and sabal palms is the lodge-inspired clubhouse. This 8,291-square-foot monument to the game of golf features a fully-stocked pro shop where you can gear up for a day on the fairways along with convenient locker rooms.
