Find Love in Lee County - River Hall Country Club

River Hall Country ClubOther than his 1997 PGA Championship win at Winged Foot in upstate New York, the greatest victories of Davis Love III’s golfing life have come in the state of Florida. Love III twice won the PLAYERS Championship, one of the richest and most prestigious tournaments in all of golf, at The Players Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Love III has parlayed his successful playing career into a booming golf design business and after design efforts in the Carolinas and Georgia, the 19-time PGA Tour winner has finally made his way to Florida.

Love III himself took a break from his PGA Tour schedule and was present as River Hall Country Club and its stunning clubhouse celebrated official grand openings Feb. 25. But the course has been open since fall 2007, when members and residents were first able to play. Quickly approaching its one-year anniversary River Hall is a testament to the passion and pride Love III has for the game of golf.

Raised in a golfing family Love III learned lessons about life and the game from his dad, Davis Jr., and has followed those principles throughout his career. Love Golf Design is a family-effort, as Love III and his brother Mark both have a hand in architectural projects. Their newest creation gives residents and members a chance to become part of a special golfing family as well.

The maturing River Hall Country Club in Lee County is Love III’s first 18-hole Signature golf course in the Sunshine State. Measuring over 7,100 yards from the gold tees, the championship layout is the centerpiece of the River Hall Country Club community east of downtown Ft. Myers off State Road 80. The 2,000-acre master-planned community was developed by the LandMar Group of Jacksonville, creator of recreationally-focused communities built from scratch with stunning golf courses and homes designed by today’s leading architects.

A “New Hometown”, River Hall offers a luxurious lifestyle and a package of amenities in a “bundled” club membership that you likely won’t find anywhere else. Country Club residents will automatically become members of the golf club, while social and invitational memberships will also be available to residents of River Hall’s other two villages, Hampton Lakes and Cascades. River Hall members will also have access to other exclusive Hampton Golf and Crescent Communities courses, many of which are private and include designs from Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Pete Dye.

Neighbors become friends here, surrounded by the beauty and splendor of well-appointed homes and spectacular golf views - through trees to the tees, fairways, lakes and greens of a championship golf course built in a natural setting.

A Course That’s Uniquely Yours

M.G. Orender is a former president of the PGA of America and now serves as President of Hampton Golf, the company commissioned to design and operate River Hall. Orender characterized Love’s design style as a stark contrast to other courses in the area.

“He’s a minimalist,” Orender said.

“Moving as little dirt as possible and working with the native surroundings so that the course looks natural, almost like it was airbrushed in.”

Love III, who hails from Sea Island, Georgia and played his college golf at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, described his vision for the course as, “very traditional in style, providing challenge through strategy versus just being long and difficult.”

This is consistent with the design philosophy stated on the company’s Web site which reads, “Though every Love Golf Design is different, each shares Love’s distinctive blend of artistry, common sense thinking and classic design strategy.”

Though River Hall stretches out to over 7,100 yards from the gold tees, four other tees measuring 6,585 to 5,125 yards should, in Love’s words, “create a course that is playable and fun for golfers of varied skill levels, one that people will look forward to playing every day.”

Set to celebrate its one-year anniversary at the end of October, River Hall features wide fairways and strategic bunkering. Designed without re-contouring the land to any great degree, the course remains quite natural.

With only one parallel fairway and half of the property set aside as nature preserve, River Hall meets Love’s stated goal of visual appeal. It also meets the day-to-day playability goal with par-3 yardages that encourage a variety of club selections.

The closing stretch emphasizes the course’s variety, as players come home starting with the reachable-in-two par-5 15th, par-3 16th, potentially drivable par-4 17th and finally the spectacular but not overly daunting dogleg left 18th hole with a bunker in the center of the fairway.

River Hall is also home to PGA Master Professional Steve Anderson who serves as Director of Instruction. One of the PGA of America’s Top Teachers, Anderson offers instruction and video analysis guaranteed to improve your game.

Off the Course

The course opens with a comfortable 7,000 square-foot clubhouse primed for future expansion. Currently the clubhouse features a full-service pro shop, locker rooms, a bar and grille and a complete instructional facility including a double-ended driving range and practice greens.

As with all Hampton Golf managed facilities, service is paramount for the members at River Hall. With professionally-trained staff and limited public play, members will be taken care of in a fashion they’d expect only from the top private clubs, because River Hall is one of them.

The Country Club’s oak hammocks and nature trails offer a peaceful paradise for custom homesites from six different, award-winning builders. Unlike many other developments with limited construction choices, residents at River Hall can draw on the expertise of David Weekley Homes, Pulte Homes, Ryland Homes, Arthur Rutenburg/Lyons Housing, Morrison Homes and Taylor Woodrow for their Lowcountry designs. A wide variety of lifestyle options are available with homes priced from the high $200s to $750,000 and up. All of the builders have models on-site to spark your imagination.

Also within the gates of River Hall are Hampton Lakes Village and The Cascades. Hampton Lakes is a community targeted toward younger families but still within a gated community, while The Cascades is River Hall’s active adult village, offering the 55+ community the security and privacy they desire and the resort-style amenities they enjoy.

River HallThe Country Club and Hampton Lakes are served by a 14,000 square-foot, two-story Town Hall and Amenity Center featuring recreational opportunities including a fitness center, multi-purpose meeting and game rooms and an indoor-outdoor snack bar all under the direction of a full-time activities director. The Cascades has its Grand Clubhouse and sports complex, featuring 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor recreational activities.

Come out and try River Hall on for size with the club’s member for a day program. The program features a round of golf on the Love III course, access to all golf club amenities, a personal property presentation at the River Hall Welcome House and unlimited play at the club’s 3-Hole Short Course, driving range and practice areas.
