Couples Wastes No Time Earning First Champions Tour Win

It didn’t take long for Fred Couples to notch up his first Champions Tour victory.  He was able to duck around an outstanding record tying round played by Tommy Armour III to obtain his first win in two tries on the Champions Tour.

Armour III shot an outstanding 11-under-par to finish second to Couples.

Couples ended the tournament with a birdie on No. 17 and finally a short putt for par on No. 18 to win the tournament. He shot an 8-under 64 and Armour shot 61.

Scott Hoch finished third at 9-under-par for the tournament. Hoch was the 2008 tournament winner.

Mike Goodes and Bernard Langer finished fourth at 8 under with Dan Forsman and Ronnie Black following up with 7 under par each.

For Couples winning only his second try out in the Champions Tour is a good thing for the Champions tour as he brings new life to the entire tour. Couples won $240,000 in his second try out on the tour.

The tournament was hard fought as a delayed round and continued cool and windy conditions prevailed in an unusual climate for Naples.

On a course with many strategically-placed hazards and traps, the shot making by Couples proved to be the major difference between him and the rest of the field.   Armour III played a spectacular round and nearly caught Couples in the grand finish.
