ESPN's Chris Berman to Blitz Shark Shootout Pro-Am

ESPN's Chris BermanThe 22nd annual Shark Shootout, hosted by Greg Norman, is almost here. Scheduled for Dec. 8-12, the one-of-a-kind competition will feature 12 two-man professional teams competing in a mixed-format of modified alternate shot, better ball and scramble.

Tiburon Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort will host the event. The team of Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker return to defend their championship. Here are the latest news and notes on the event:

- In the nine years The Shark Shootout has been held at Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort, the margin of victory has never been greater than two strokes for any team. In fact, two of the four playoffs in Shootout history have been in Naples.

- For the second year, Greg Norman will host the Shark Shootout 5K presented by Comcast at 7 a.m. Saturday at Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort. Last year, nearly 500 runners and walkers participated and helped raise awareness and funds for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. For fees and other information, visit www.thesharkshootout.com/5k. The registration fee includes a grounds ticket to Saturday’s golf competition.

- Chris Berman will be making his annual visit next week when he participates in the Pro-Am portion of The Shark Shootout, Wednesday and Thursday. The award-winning commentator and host for ESPN is a part-time resident of Southwest Florida. For the past eight years Berman has made it a point to help the tournament in its quest to raise awareness for children’s cancer. By the way, Berman has twice been a member of a winning amateur team in the Shark Shootout Pro-Am competition.

- Ian Poulter is certainly the hottest individual competitor coming to Naples next week. On Sunday, he finished runner-up after losing a playoff at the Dubai World Championship. A week earlier, he won the Hong Kong Open. Poulter, ranked 8th in the world, will team with Dustin Johnson, currently ranked 14th in the world.

- On Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 Greg Norman will host his annual Junior Instructional Clinic. Beginning at 2 p.m., the tournament gates will be open free of charge. Upon conclusion of first round tournament competition (approx. 4 p.m.), tournament host Greg Norman and other Tour pros will gather on the Tiburón practice facility and offer instruction tips as well as answer questions. Norman will also be joined by Kevin Compare and his In-COMPARE-able Trick Shot Exhibition. Local PGA professionals will be on-hand following the exhibition for additional instructional tips.

- The longest playoff in Shark Shootout history is three holes when Greg Norman and Steve Elkington beat Peter Jacobsen and John Cook in 1998. It is Norman’s only win in the Shootout.
