Fred Nagelson Wins Sun Cup Amateur Golf Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Sun Cup Amateur Golf Tournament produced its very first champion on Friday, May 4th at Old Corkscrew Golf Club. Fred Nagelson, from Fort Myers, Florida (Olde Hickory Country Club) persevered through five rounds of competitive golf against a field of 50 of his peers on Southwest Florida’s finest golf courses. Fred had net scores of 71-69-70-82 in regulation and he closed with a net 71 at Old Corkscrew Golf Club to claim the inaugural Sun Cup!

Golfers from across the country competed in the week long amateur golf competition that highlighted several local businesses, organizations, and charities. Nightly activities coincided with competitive tournament golf and provided a unique opportunity to link players with the Sun Cup’s sponsors and partners. The tournament was highlighted by The Sun Cup Expo, hosted at the Daniels Driving Range. The Sun Cup Expo featured a trick-shot exhibition by the “Golf Doctor,” Mike Calbot and a celebrity appearance by Kelly Jacques from Golf Channel’s Big Break.

The tournament kicked off at Plantation Golf and Country Club on Monday, April 30th. Throughout the week competitors were hosted at The Verandah Golf Club, The Forest Country Club, and Old Corkscrew Golf Club. 72 holes of 100% handicapped net stroke play produced 18 qualifiers from a field of 50+ amateur golfers. Those 18 qualifiers then played off for the Sun Cup Championship at Old Corkscrew Golf Club, perhaps the most challenging test of golf in all of Southwest Florida. Emerging from the over 60 age division, Fred Nagelson took top honors and claimed his spot in Sun Cup history!

Tournament participants were treated to nightly dinners and awards ceremonies where prizes were awarded for daily competitions. Maximum amateur prize payouts were on the line for players in the Sun Cup. Fred Nagelson took home a $750 gift package from Callaway Golf as part of his award for winning the Sun Cup.

The Sun Cup will now build on the success of the inaugural year and deliver Southwest Florida’s premier amateur golf tournament again in 2013. Please visit for a look at our inaugural year and for registration information for next year.
