Shark Shootout News and Notes

2010 Shark ShootoutIt is always interesting to follow the progress of Shark Shootout rookies. Last year, Rickie Fowler competed in his first Shootout, was the youngest player in the field and was ranked 262nd in the Official World Golf Rankings.

As of today, Fowler is ranked 25th in the world after his first full year as a professional. Fowler, by the way, will be in Naples again this year.

- Only two teams have defended the title in the 21-year history of The Shark Shootout - Brad Faxon/Scott McCarron (2000-01) and Hank Kuehne/Jeff Sluman (2003-04).

- Just seven players have won The Shark Shootout in their first attempt: Mark O’Meara (1989), Curtis Strange (1989), Fred Couples (1990), Scott McCarron (1997), Hank Kuehne (2003), Rod Pampling (2006) and Woody Austin (2007).  K.J. Choi,  Darren Clarke, Jason Day, Jeff Overton, Mike Weir will all be making their debut this year.

- Last year, nine of the 12 teams posted bogey-free rounds on Saturday compared to none during Friday’s first round of modified alternate-shot.

- Flashback Moment I: In 2009, J.B. Holmes and Kenny Perry began the final round with an eagle on Hole No.1. They also eagled the 17th hole on Saturday, giving the team two eagles in a three-hole stretch. During the week, a total of nine eagles were recorded by the field.

- Flashback Moment II: Also in 2009, Tim Clark used a six-iron to make a hole-in-one at the 183-yard 12th hole on Sunday. It represents the first ace recorded at The Shark Shootout since the event has been held at Tiburon Golf Club, starting in 2001.
