Imagine a course so secluded that it's only accessible by passenger ferry or private boat. And once you reach the idyllic setting of Bald Head Island, you're main mode of transportation is the same on the golf course as it is on the village's roadways. This minimalistic paradise doesn't allow cars, so residents get around using modified electric golf carts.

An uncomplicated, visually stunning championship challenge, the Bald Head Island Club Course is saturated with natural features and local wildlife. The seaside breezes that buffet the 18-hole layout add an extra element of difficulty.

Designed by acclaimed architect George Cobb, who also crafted the magnificent Par 3 Course at Augusta National Golf Club, this spectacular island golf course traverses its way over dunes, around lagoons, along the ocean and through a maritime forest. The gallery at the club consists of herons, turtles, egrets, foxes and alligators.

Baldheadisland.com, a Web site promoting travel to the southernmost of North Carolina's cape islands, had this to say of teeing it up in this stress free environment: "On Bald Head Island, golf is more than a game. It's a sightseeing excursion."

Golf Digest gave the layout 4.5 stars in its prestigious listing of "Places to Play," and Zagat, one of the foremost authorities on golf and leisure, placed it in the "Very Good to Excellent" category in a recent review. Zagat said of the Bald Head Island Club Course:

"Beautiful views grace this difficult course that provides a unique challenge as it winds through maritime forest and runs out to serve up holes exposed to ocean winds, along with blind shots and tough green placements throughout. The ferry ride to Bald Head Island is a big treat. P.S. look out for lots of wildlife; perhaps even more gators than on the Discovery Channel.

Nearby Southport serves as the gateway to Bald Head Island, providing golfers and guests with ferry service departing on the hour. The ride takes around 20 minutes. Bald Head Island is a short drive form Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Wilmington, N.C.
