Lakewood Golf Course, the first in Brown County, was develped by Forrest and Phylis Wahl after they purchased the land for the nine hole course in 1961. A small frame house was renovated for use as a clubhouse. An adjoining farm was purchased in 1965 and a back nine holes was to make Lakewood an eighteen hole layout.

Additional facilities have been added over the years including two tennis courts and a driving range. The present clubhouse which was built in 1977 houses the pro shop, full service restaurant, lounge, and kitchen. Three service building-a shop, storage building, and cart building also were constructed.

This has been a family owned venture from the beginning. James the older son who was a teenager when the golf course was under construction, helped with that undertaking as well as working on the golf course and in the pro shop until he left to attend Ohio State University, Kathleen, the daughter, helped in the pro shop and the sandwich shop during her high school years; and then returned two years to manage the restaurant after the present clubhouse was constructed. Jonathan, the younger son, has been at Lakewood during all these years in various capacities. He leased the golf course operation in May 1989 and was the manager and golf superintendent.

It was Jon who redesigned the back nine and supervised the reconstruction in 1987. A computer controlled irrigation system was installed to service all eighteen greens, the practice putting green, and the tees. At this time an area between the 15th and 18th fairways was planned for housing development and the base for the streets was laid. City water and sewer lines have been extended to serve this area, known as Lakewood Estates, and construction of the first home was started in May 1992. thirty nine acres of the back nine holes have been incorporated into the village of Georgetown, as well as the front nine holes where the clubhouse in located.

Lakewood continues to be family owned, in 1993 Jonathan and Sandy, purchased the golf course from Jon's parents. In 1994 the adjoining farm of 40 acres was bought, which made five new holes, on the front nine. This created an island green, a five acre lake, and a hole of 622 yards. The land where the other holes were taken out became more building sites. There are now 16 lots still available for building single family homes, also 9 lots for condos or multi family. Since 1995 the restaurant has become a sports bar restaurant, with two indoor Full Swing Golf Simulators, so you can play year round.

Lakewood Golf Course is now a par 71, 6073 yard eighteen hole layout which is open to the public on a daily greens fee basis or season membership.
