Family-Friendly, Kidwell-Designed Gem

The next time you’re turned off by the corporate-designed golf factories and want to get back to natural golf in an unspoiled setting, with family ownership, and yet also be challenged by a layout from one of Ohio’s most renowned architects that’s been awarded 4-Stars by Golf Digest’s Places to Play (in the company of courses like Longaberger, Elks Run and Avalon Lakes), you’ll be surprised at all you’ll find at Mohican Hills Golf Club in Jeromesville in Ashland County.

Original owner Jim Markling still manages the operation with his daughter Jan and son Tom, and what they oversee is truly something worth seeing and playing. Markling, who was in the oil drilling business, had a secret ambition to someday build his own golf course. He bought the undeveloped Mohican Hills land in the early ’70s and quietly enlisted the help of a fledgling designer out of Ohio State, Jack Kidwell, and one of his young protégés Michael Hurdzan, to lay out two nines. They moved very little dirt to preserve the contours of the landscape through the old corn, soybean and wheat fields and opened the first nine in 1972, the second in ’75.

Kidwell, of course, became an Ohio design legend and Hurdzan is recognized as one of the country’s leading golf course architects, but one of his very first layouts is ohican Hills.

Word-of-mouth has spread the Mohican Hills story since, but the Marklings are now ready to tell the outside world about their 4-Star gem. Under the supervision of former Wooster Country Club superintendent Kim Derr, hundreds of trees have been planted over the last 20 years, adding to the natural beauty, quiet ambience, and getaway-feel of Mohican Hills.

Oh yes, the Hills. There are plenty of angular lies to play from on this layout, the most scenic view from the par-4 12th, with its 90-foot drop on the approach to the green. The front nine boasts almost no flat putts on its large, very undulating greens. Derr and his crew have recently doubled the size of the green at the uphill 16th, rated as the second toughest hole on the course. A streak affects strategy on at least four holes on the back side and ponds come into play on fewer than a half-dozen holes, the only forced carry though is the last 70-yards at the par-3 17th.

Besides the variety of lies you’ll find at Mohican Hills, you’ll also be challenged by five varying-length par-3s that will likely have you pulling different clubs on each one. A couple of the par-5s are reachable in two swings, but become more risky the more reward you seek.

But there’s no risk that you’ll not have a great time. The friendly, family-oriented staff at Mohican Hills has been around for years and knows how to treat visitors to their functional clubhouse featuring snacks and sandwiches for players, and those practicing at the full range and practice area.

The Marklings stake their family’s reputation on the 4-Star golf experience that awaits at Mohican Hills. For more information, call (419) 368-3303.
