East Golf Club - Your Game Deserves This Course

Tartan East Golf Club - New Albany, OH We all love “new,” especially when it’s new and improved. The newest jewel in the great golf gallery of the Columbus area is the “new” East Golf Club.

This New Albany getaway that’s located just seven miles outside the I-270 loop off Rt. 161 has been reconditioned from the formerly private Winding Hollow Golf Club with thousands of hours of TLC by the same Management people who’ve built quite a reputation for excellence at Fields and the Golf Club of Dublin.

The best news is that we can now all play this Arthur Hills masterpiece that just re-opened late last summer.

Hills is an Ohio native who already has a Hall of Fame list of classics on his resume across the Buckeye State, from Longaberger and Red Hawk Run to Shaker Run and Turnberry. East Golf Club East is now ready to take its place among that group of Hills gems.

Yes, it’s now an upscale public course, but East still has that secluded, private club feel. Maybe it’s because of the heavily-wooded layout that has no parallel holes, or homes anywhere near the property to distract you from your special day of golf. East really is a back-tonature journey with deer and other wild creatures often seen on-site. There really is no hint of civilization when you’re playing East, quite remarkable considering its proximity to the population center of central Ohio.

In true Arthur Hills style, he makes a primarily flat piece of land feel like there are significant elevation changes through his use of mounding to create rolling fairways throughout the 200-acre site.

Something else that’s pure Hills is the demand, not so much for distance, as for shot-making skills. From the nearly-6,900 yard back tees, the par-4s range from 365 yards to 445. You’re likely to use four different clubs on the par-3s no matter which of the 5 tees you choose to use, and the par-5s are all over 500 yards from the tips, most of them playing to smaller-than-average greens. The design of the course takes advantage of the variety of winds that sweep through the area, combining with the rolling terrain to give you different shot options every time you play.

After a pair of stout par-4s to start, East really throws you a curve, with a pair of par-3s sandwiched around the longest par-5 on the course. The first par-3 is extremely wooded. The other requires a tee shot to carry over water to the green. In fact, the stretch of the fourth, fifth and sixth holes is a bear (one animal you won’t see on the grounds), nearly 2/3 of a mile of challenging golf. And the contrast between the brutish sixth and the relatively short, but extremely picturesque par-4 seventh will not go unnoticed.

Three of the four hardest holes on the back nine come right after the turn, but it’s the last three holes that just might make or break your round. A meaty par-4 16th is followed by the longest par-3 at Tartan East, the nearly 200-yard 17th, much of it over marshland. The fairly short par-5 18th is a great risk-reward finish wrapping around a pond that runs the length of the hole on the right hand side, all of it in front of a fairly large audience viewing the conclusion of your round from the spacious clubhouse that features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the home hole.

One of the things that has not been overlooked by the new management is the care and feeding of East. Among the top priorities of Management has always been great greens. East has also been “opened up” by trimming back many of the higher trees to let more sunlight through the wooded canopies, and then by removing much of the ground cover to allow for playing out of the woods, Carolina-style.

A great day at the golf course is impacted by a number of outside factors, the maintenance of the course being primary, but also the amenities that a player can enjoy while a “member for a day.” Besides all of the goodies, many of them sale-priced, in the well-stocked Golf Shop, there’s the fun and camaraderie of the Tap-In Lounge with its view of the proceedings at 18, leather appointments, card tables, Pub grill menu and Buckeye and Big Ten sports on the two 60-inch big-screen TVs!

Sure East is great for a single, or a foursome to enjoy a day at the golf course, but drawing on its private-course roots, East loves a party. Whether it be a group of 12 playing golf around a conference within its variety of flexible, airy clubhouse meeting rooms, or a special event, wedding or reunion of 350 or more, East’s Banquet Center and full catering operation looks forward to your next gathering, whether golf is involved or not.

“The greatest game deserves quality and service,” claims President Steve Renaker on the company’s Web site. “We are here to ensure that happens.” That mantra, and the company’s driving philosophy that “We win with people” isn’t just a slogan. You’ll see it in the performance of the staff at any property day-in and day-out.
