The Links at Groveport

The Links at GroveportThe Village of Groveport likes to think of itself as “Central Ohio’s hometown,” which would make the Links at Groveport the hometown’s hometown course. The formerly private Willows Golf Club was obtained by the village in January of 2005 and word’s still getting out that this private club-style gem located just 15 minutes southeast of downtown Columbus and 5 minutes outside I-270 on US 33 is open for everyone to enjoy.

You don’t have to imagine a privatequality course carrying a top weekend greens fee of $40 (with cart) and many opportunities to play for much less. It is very real at this historic layout, begun with 9 holes from Frank Waugh back in 1929 and complemented with nine “new” ones from Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Jack Kidwell, a pair of Ohio design legends, back in 1971.

Its former name, the Willows, tells you a lot about the landscape at this classic tract. Woods and water and immaculately-kept fairways and roughs, greens and tees, welcome you to an original golf experience. Four sets of tees that range from 5,500 to 6,600 yards assure you’ll get all the challenge you’ll want, but an experience that’ll keep you coming back to The Links at Groveport for more.

The par-3s might be the “stars” at the Links at Groveport. Measuring from 135 yards to nearly 230 from the back tees, you’ll have numerous club-selec-tion decisions to make, even on the short holes. None of the par-3s are handicapped among the three easiest holes on the course, the third playing downhill from an elevated tee, the 13th over water to a peninsular green. The 9th? How about the test of a 228-yard tee ball onto a green measuring just 2000 square-feet!

The par-5s measure from a reachable 460-yards from the middle tees at the fourth to the wonderful finishing hole that just keeps bending to the right, requiring an over-the-water carry to reach the green on the 2nd, 3rd, or maybe even 4th shot! The variety of the par-4s is in keeping with the rest of the course. The eighth measuring just over 300 yards while there are four of them that measure over 400 from the tips.

Even if you just want to tune up your game, the Links at Groveport might be just the place, with its enormous 35,000 square-foot bentgrass practice tee, chipping green and bunker available to hone your skills, if the smell of Papa Joe’s pizza doesn’t get you from the delightful clubhouse that can handle meetings, receptions and special events for 120.

While the upcoming league season is almost filled, the Links at Groveport encourages smaller group outings, and with special rates for Seniors (over 55) and Juniors (under 17), its obvious that the Links at Groveport is a special place for all generations of golfers to gather and glory in the game.
