Dragon's Fire Golf Club Takes Flight

Dragon’s Fire Golf Club Takes FlightThe Greater Toronto Area’s first dragon is rising from the ashes of a former countryside tree farm in the west end of the region just north of Burlington.

While the 18-hole daily fee facility has been three years in the making, golf course architect Boris Danoff and owner Bryan DeCunha can’t wait for Dragon’s Fire Golf Club to take flight in May when the course opens to the public.

“Dragon myths and legends have been around since the dawn of time and we hope we have created something special here that is true both to their magical spirit and to the spirit of the game, thus creating a memorable golf experience,” says DeCunha.

The secrets dwelling within Dragon’s Fire’s walkable parkland layout are guarded by some 80 well-positioned and masterfully crafted bunkers, tree-lined fairways and an abundance of natural hazards. DeCunha, the former managing partner of Royal Ontario Golf Club in Milton, called upon Danoff, a Torontobased architect who recently co-designed Thundering Waters GC in Niagara Falls with John Daly, to create a player friendly layout.

“The vast expanse of trees that we found on the site and the rolling landscape presented a great opportunity to turn this countryside property into a spectacular golf course layout with an established look to it,” says Danoff.

The par-72 course stretches from 5,200 to over 7,200 yards, with five sets of large tee blocks to choose from. When you play each of the holes surrounded by mature trees and farm fields, you are simply overwhelmed by the sense of seclusion and peacefulness.

“I believe it’s the strong diversity of the holes and the strategic options that they present that will make the course enjoyable and memorable,” said Danoff.

Whether you’re coming from the east or the west on Highway 401 or the QEW, Dragon’s Fire is easy to find. The club is located between the two major thoroughfares just east of Highway 6 at #342 - 8th Concession, Carlisle.

Dragon’s Fire was built to the highest of standards and boasts top notch USGA greens, intricately shaped bunkers filled with “Ohio” sand, the best varieties of turf grasses, wall to wall irrigation and drainage systems and continuous cart paths. To complement its championship layout and to provide its guests with a first class experience, the club offers all amenities expected from a premier facility such as a fully-equipped driving range and practice facility, top-of-the-line Club Car Champion carts, as well as the Sky Caddie GPS to measure exact yardage.

A stone wall and cedar shake roof clubhouse will complete the experience at Dragon’s Fire. It is scheduled to open for the 2009 season and will provide fullfledged banquet facilities, together with casual lounges and patios.
