Ginn Championship at Hammock Beach

Conservatory Course at Hammock BeachTom Watson’s Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach is hosting limited play this winter in anticipation of its first big event, the Champions Tour’s Ginn Championship at Hammock Beach March 26- April 1, 2007. The tourney at the Ginn Resorts’ Hammock Beach Club in Palm Coast, south of St. Augustine marks the return of the Champions Tour to the first coast after a four year absence. Florida residents Mark O’Meara and Nick Price will be among the “rookies” eligible for the $375,000 first prize from a $2.5-million purse surpassed on the Champions Tour only by the U.S. Senior Open.

Ginn Sports Entertainment received rave reviews for its initial LPGA event at Reunion Resort & Club in Orlando in 2006. Ginn is continuing sponsorship of that event in 2007 and adding the ACE Group Classic in Naples and the Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika Sorenstam in Charleston, SC.

“Professional golf is a major thrust in the marketing of our golf resort and real estate communities,” said Bobby Ginn, President and CEO of Ginn Resorts. “We’ve got to be more than the traditional “country club” to keep our marketing edge. We want our club members, residents and resort guests to have the same sports and entertainment amenities that the guests at the finest resorts expect.” The Club at Hammock Beach features luxury custom homes and a 12-story, $150-million resort along two miles of Atlantic Oceanfront.

Watson’s par-72 design will have many of the design features from the courses where he won five British Opens, including more than one “big-faced” pot bunker and at least three sod-walled bunkers. Next April Fools Day, he’d like to be the one enjoying the last joke. In his words, “I still haven’t won a damn tourney in Florida yet.” His own layout would be a great place to break that run.
