Harmony Golf Preserve Practices Environmental Intelligence without Sacrificing On-Course Excellence

Harmony Golf PreserveIt's true that opulence does exist within the section of society that strives to cut back on our environmental footprint. It can be costly to go green with expenditures like biodegradable shirts, hemp-fiber sheets and homes strapped with pricey solar panels. But the majority of us have a misconception about eco-friendly living; we equate going green with sacrifice of quality. For example, parting with our prized SUV's in favor of a hybrid equipped with less horsepower that gets more mileage per gallon.

Harmony Golf Preserve, which is just one component of the award-winning master-planned Town of Harmony, has shown a strong commitment to the environment, providing a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property as well as an unencumbered experience for players. Last year, Harmony Golf Preserve achieved its designation as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for golf courses.

"To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Jim Sluiter, staff Ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs. These categories include such areas as Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation and Water Quality Management.

Garnering a distinction honoring environmental stewardship that less than 100 Florida golf courses have achieved didn't come at the expense of amenities and on-course excellence. To verify that claim, look no further than the company that manages the golf facility, Troon Golf. Troon is the largest, and widely considered the best, golf course management company in the country and consistently strives to create extraordinary experiences by delivering superior service, amenities and playing surfaces.

A spectacular view of Harmony Golf Preserve's Johnny Miller Signature Course

Harmony isn't just a golf course, it's a preserve. This designation is attributed to the layout's fresh approach to golf course design - one that seeks to preserve the treasure of Harmony's 11,000+ acres of broad meadows, towering stands of southern pines and two shimmering 500-acre natural lakes. In accordance with the nature-intensive setting, no homes will be built that front on the golf course.

By wrapping the Harmony Golf Preserve around existing wetlands, U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller created a stunning combination of art and nature. The course, which is open to the public, is the only Johnny Miller Signature design in Central Florida.

Rated 4 ½ Stars by Golf Digest from 2005 - 2009, Harmony Golf Preserve measures more than 7,400 yards from the professional tees, providing low handicap golfers with a formidable challenge. However, five overall tee positions and very few forced carries make the course very playable for all ages and abilities.

The 18-hole championship course is characterized by generous fairways, giving golfers plenty of landing room off the tee. The liberal landing strips are arrayed strategically with a number of Harmony's 87 total bunkers. Well contoured and meticulously crafted, Harmony's greens provide a flawless, firm and fast putting surface for professional level conditions. A number of the Tifdwarf greens feature a moderate amount of undulation, while others are more straightforward.

Harmony Golf PreservePlayers will have to deal with water hazards on occasion, but water isn't prevalent enough as to frustrate mid-level golfers. Overall, water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes at Harmony Golf Preserve. The par-3 17th does force golfers to carry the ball over a stretch of water, but for the most part tee to fairway is very forgiving.

But what makes Harmony so special is its relationship with the natural ecosystem of Central Florida. Basically superimposed upon a 260-acre wildlife preserve without disrupting the natural rhythm of life, this is a golf course that was first designed to serve as a fully-protected environmental sanctuary, and second as a world-class recreational facility. Now golfers get to reap those benefits throughout their round as they are treated to inspiring scenes of nature that include close encounters with a tremendous variety of life forms, from deer and otters to ospreys and owls.

The natural wonders and world-class golf at Harmony Golf Preserve are only augmented by the exceptionally helpful, knowledgeable and welcoming staff.

Practice facilities are available to guests, giving players ample opportunity to warm up before testing the Miller design. The complete practice area features a 45-station driving range, 9,000-square-foot putting green and short game area.

Open to the public and affordable at less than $100 for a tee time during the peak spring season, Harmony Golf Preserve is a must-play for anyone visiting the Orlando area for golf. Harmony is on par with any of the highly acclaimed courses in Central Florida, offering an excellent layout with above average character.
