Hudson earns 1st career win in IJGT event

HARMONY, FLA. – Windy conditions made for tough competition at the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Florida Swing event. Held January 19-20 at Harmony Golf Preserve, the two-day, 36-hole Florida Swing featured junior golfers ages 14-19 representing 14 states and six countries. First time IJGT participants Daniel Hudson of Western Springs, Ill., and Juliana Sebastian of Columbia, S.C., captured the titles in the Boys 15-19 and Girls Division respectively. John Felitto of Mountainside, N.J., took home his second IJGT title in the Boys 14 & Under Division.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, D. Hudson remained consistent during the event firing even-par 72 during the first round and 2-under-par 70 to bring his tournament total to 2-under-par 142. He began the five shots back of first-round leader and KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award winner, Tyler Dierwechter of Oldsmar, Fla., who carded a 3-under-par 69 in the first round.

“When I saw that [Dierwechter] came in with a 69, I was surprised because of how tough this course is,” D. Hudson said. “I knew coming into the final round that I would have to play well and not make any mistakes.”

D. Hudson started off strong with a 3-under-par after the front nine. He ran into some trouble on No. 10 carding a double bogey, but made up for it with two more birdies on the back.

This was D. Hudson’s first IJGT event.

“It feels great to win,” D. Hudson beamed, “This is also my first career win as I had eight second place finishes last year on other tours, and it feels good to finally be the champion.”

Finishing just behind D. Hudson was a pack of participants hot on his heels. In a three-way tie for second was James Cresswell, of Orwigsburg, Pa., Giovanni Trione of Rome, Italy and Dierwechter who all finished 3-over-par 147 for the event.

The Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award was given to Zhengkai Bai of Shantou, China, D. Hudson, Cresswell, and Trione who all carded 2-under-par 70 in the final round.

In the Boys 14 and Under Division, Felitto captured his second IJGT victory. Winning the Architects Golf Club Major in October, Felitto continued his solid play into the spring season.

Felitto started off the tournament with a 9-over-par 81. Felitto shared the lead heading into the second round with Evan White of Greenville, S.C., but was able to start the second round strong carding even-par on the front nine.

“I knew I should have played better in the first round, but I have been struggling with my swing and my confidence,” Felitto said. “I played much better today and gave myself the lead.”

Felitto finished the final round carding even-par 72, moving his tournament total to 9-over-par 153 to capture the victory in the Boys 14 and Under Division.

Finishing just behind Felitto was first-round co-leader, White who finished with 16-over-par 160. In third place, from Irvington, N.Y., was Will Rand who carded 17-over-par 161.

In the Girls Division, first time IJGT player, Sebastian was awarded the KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award and took an early lead over the division with a 9-over-par 81. With her solid iron shots, she fired a 3-over-par 75 in the final round to propel her to victory.

“My [final] round didn’t start off very well because I three putted a few times, but I got up and down on No. 4 and that really sparked my round,” Sebastian said. “This is my first time leading after the first round and also my first time winning an event so it feels really great.”

Sebastian was awarded the Clazic Belts Low Final Round in the Girls Division.

Zora Moore of Milford, N.J., placed second with a tournament total of 20-over-par 164. MacKenzie Sexe of Shakopee, Minn., place third with 25-over-par 169.

The next IJGT event will be the Hilton Head Open held at Dolphin Head Golf Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C., January 26-27, 2013.
