Bergeon to play Sara Bay Classic

The Sara Bay Classic has added some home-cooking to its field for the April tournament of the Symetra LPGA  Futures Tour.

Although she has struggled as a pro, Lindsey Bergeon's amateur career is legendary to the Sarasota golf community.

Just recently, the tournament gave her a sponsor's exemption into the pro tournament at the Sara Bay Country Club.

"I am over the moon on this," she said after hearing about the invitation. "I am so excited. All my friends and family that have followed my career will be there to see me play."

And her career is very noteworthy. Three times she was named the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Female Golfer of the Year in high school. At 16, she set the women's course record at the Bradenton Country Club with a 67.

As a Riverview High School senior, she won the Donald Ross Invitational at Sara Bay so she is not unfamiliar with the course.

All of that earned her a scholarship to Florida Southern in Lakeland, where she was a four-time All-American at the Division II college, placing second in the 2007 national collegiate tournament.

But it all started for Bergeon, who was born and raised in Sarasota, at Bobby Jones Golf Club where her mother, Lori, would drop her off to play 18 or 36 holes a day as a junior while her mother worked a nursing shift at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

"Being raised as an only child to a single mother, I learned the value of hard work and sacrifice at a young age," Bergeon said.

The Sara Bay Classic officially begins April 18 with the first of two pro-ams. The first round of the three-day tournament starts April 20.

For the past several years, Bergeon has been working with Matt Auen, the director of golf at Laurel Oak CC.  Auen's added duties include being her caddie for tournament week.

In four years as a pro, Bergeon has had four top-20 finishes, playing on the Futures Tour or Canadian Tour.

"I could not be happier about playing in a tournament in my hometown," she said.  "It would be great to get my first win here."
