Colgate qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur

Mike Colgate has played golf for just a few years but is rapidly making a name for himself in the junior ranks.

The senior to be at Sarasota High School was the medalist Tuesday in the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero.
He shot rounds of 71-73 --- 144 to win the qualifier by two strokes.
"His strengths are his course management and mental toughness," said Barry Cheesman, a former PGA Tour pro.
"He does not make a lot of mistakes on the golf course. Also, he has very good short game. He's been a student of mine for about two years now and he's grown tremendously as a player in that time period."
The U.S. Junior Amateur will be held July 18-23 on the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
