Gammicchia captures City title

The fast improving Tatiana Gammicchia stunned the field in the City of Sarasota Women's Championship last weekend, and in doing so, upset defending champ Wendi Golden.

The Russian-born Gammicchia, who has been playing golf for just eight years, fired rounds of 70 and 73 (143) to win her first City of Sarasota title by one stroke. Golden finished second at 70-74 -144. Debbie Smither was third at 70-75 --- 145.

After Saturday's first round where three women were tied at 70, she birdied the back-to-back par 5's on the back nine of the British Course on Sunday at Bobby Jones Golf Club to vault her to victory.

She also teamed with Veronica Johnson to win the Women's Better Ball portion of the tournament, also by one stroke. The posted rounds of 67-70 (137).

The 45-year-old Gammicchia has status on the LPGA Futures Tour and hopes to receive a sponsor's exemption into this month's Sara Bay Classic at the Sara Bay Country Club, April 20-22.
