Pleis Stages Huge Comeback

By Mark Cardon

Steve Pleis of Sarasota was once a local playing partner with Paul Azinger, but Zinger can bet his lucky stars he wasn’t in the West Florida Golf Tour field this past Tuesday (Aug. 14).

After shooting a first-round 73, Pleis came from eight shots back during the final round to capture the final Summer Tour event at Laurel Oak Country Club in a playoff.  He posted an 8-under-par 64 to catch Manatee County’s Seath Lauer at 137.

Lauer blocked his tee shot into the hazard on the first playoff hole, but left his chip and run hanging on the edge of the cup for a would-be par.

Meanwhile, Pleis hit his approach shot within 10 feet of the cup and two-putted for par and the victory.

The 64 by Pleis was the lowest score on the WFGT in 10 events at Laurel Oak.
