Cobblestone Golf Club

Cobblestone Golf ClubCobblestone Golf Club features 18 holes of stunning championship golf sensitively routed through a nature preserve and protected wetlands. Rated as one of the top 10 course developments of the 1990’s, Cobblestone has matured into a friendly and challenging experience for your next golf adventure.

There is a quiet Carolinas feel to the course with many elevated tees and greens leading to fairways edged by rolling mounds and thick grasses. Beautiful pines towering over lush tropical foliage frame many of the holes but the true challenge of this gem is created by its location in and around protected wetlands. Routing of the course is unique to the area since very few holes run parallel to each other. The sandhill cranes, otters, turtles, deer, bobcats and an occasional alligator create a serene setting to test your abilities.

Tee shots on many holes are very intimidating as golfers face forced carries over marshland, and landing areas that are often obscured by pines and brush. Once safely in the fairway, a look back often reveals that the landing area is twice as big as it looked from the tee. At 6,811 yards from the tips, distance is not the priority that placement and control is. “The place where the players play”.

Cobblestone is target golf with severe hazards. Stray drives and approach shots will require going back to the bag for another ball. The design incorporates six sets of tees with Pro Tees set at 6,811 yards, the White tees at 5,505 yards and the Red tees at 5,033 yards. Forced carries are required but the course blueprint offers choices for less skilled players with bail-out areas to the side of most water hazards.

Cobblestone Golf ClubOn the back nine, the 12th opens a difficult stretch with a tough par-4 that requires nerves of steel on the approach to the green. At 465 yards, distance seems the objective but the second shot is actually more nerve racking since the long iron to the green must cross the lake surrounding the peninsula green. As before, bail-out options are available to the right, but the short game must be fine-tuned to avoid big numbers.

Memorable par-3’s often define the finishing holes on many courses, and “Island,” the par-3 15th is no exception. It’s only 160 yards, but the green is small and, of course, surrounded by water and two bunkers.

The par-5 18th is called “Home” but could also be called “Intimidation”. A 35-acre lake stands between the elevated tees and the green 570 yards away. The tee shot must be a bold swing combined with careful placement to even think about going for the green in two. An elevated tree line along the right side of the fairway looms over the tee shot hoping to grab any errant drives. Second shots bring decision time as the green is directly 90 degrees to your left but an approach shot must carry 200 yards over a lake. Any shot less than perfect and you will have to drop another ball – and you still haven’t gotten any nearer to the green. The cautious player can lay up along the right with an iron although he will still be required to cross a small portion of the lake fronting the green. Check with the pro shop to see which tees are right for your game.

The Cobblestone clubhouse, under dramatic renovations, has added a game room with a pool table, dart board and game tables to encourage players to come inside and make yourself at home. We have also added a state-of-the-art exercise room to keep golfers in shape for their upcoming round.

Cobblestone Golf ClubCobblestone is the home of the 1992 United States Senior Open Champion Larry Laoretti, who played for 10 years with the Senior TOUR. He became an “overnight” hero when he won the U.S. Senior Open at Saucaon Valley Country Club. Everyone still remembers the former club professional hitting shots the last day with a cigar in his mouth and the trademark wide-brim hat on his head. While he continues to compete locally, Laoretti spends a great deal of his time at the new Laoretti’s Grill and Pub overlooking the signature 18th hole.

We invite you to come play our beautiful course and enjoy a drink at Laoretti’s Grill. Who knows… maybe you will be one of the lucky ones to win a chance to play a round with Larry!
