Dollards End Decade Long Drought at Parent-Child Event

PALM CITY – After a decade of trying and several near misses, Wayne and Jason Dollard finally were the winners Saturday in the 23rd annual Honda Classic Parent-Child tournament at Hammock Creek Golf Club.

“We’ve been trying for 10 years,” said the elder Dollard, of Reston, Va., where he is an ondodontist (“That sounds better than ‘root canal specialist’,” he said with a smile). “We’ve had a few runner-up finishes where we were beaten by the Lee, but not today.”

The Dollards posted a scramble score of 12 under par 60 with 10 birdies and an eagle at the par-5 17th hole. Jason Dollard, a Delray Beach attorney, hit driver and 4-wood to the 17th green and Wayne made the 10-foot eagle putt. Starting at the ninth hole, their birdies were at Nos. 13, 15, 16, 18, 2 through 5, then 7 and 8.

“We got off to a bit of a slow start,” said Jason Dollard, “but overall it was just a nice day of golf, a good day all-around.”

J.D. (Willie) Lee III of Belle Glade and son Jesse Lee IV of Wellington were the two-time defending champions and had won 12 times in the previous 22 years but could do no better than fifth Saturday with 65. “We both hit it out of bounds at the 15th,” another par-5, Willie said. The Lees also eagled the 17th but it was too late. They had seven birdies and a bogey earlier in the day.

Dana and Cullen de Windt of Palm City were second at 62 on eight birdies and an eagle. Tied for third at 63 were two-time former champions Bob and Tim Stieren of Palm Beach Gardens with Armando and Ariel Martin of West Palm Beach.

Low net among the 21 teams in the open division were Jim Lantz of Palm Beach Gardens and his granddaughter, Reagan Jahn of Jupiter with 60.

Jahn, 13, an eighth grader and a member of the girls golf team at the Benjamin School, aced the 117-yard 14th hole with a 9-iron. It was her second hole-in-one of the summer.

There was also a special flight where the child is 12 years or younger. There were 12 twosomes. The winners were Jamie and Julian Krone of Delray Beach, low gross, 66, and Peter and Zach Venditti of Boca Raton, low net, 63.
