Morin, Kostelnik Capture Assistants Team Championship

HOBE SOUND - Alan Morin won his 15th Southeast Chapter title Tuesday when he paired with Michael Kostelnik to capture the Assistants Team Championship at Hobe Sound Golf Club.

Morin, an assistant professional at The Falls CC, Lake Worth, and Kostelnik, of the Lost Tree Club, North Palm Beach, shot a four-ball stroke play (better ball) score of six under par 66. Morin set the pace  from the start at the 15th hole with birdies at Nos. 17, 1, 2, 3 and 6. Kostelnik birdied the 12th hole and saved Morin with a few pars.

“We both played pretty steady,” Morin said. “You just can’t make bogeys in this kind of tournament and expect to do well.” It was Morin’s second victory in the Assistants Team, the first with Dan Grannan in 2004 at Hammock Creek GC.

In the Senior Team Championship conducted simultaneously, the winners were Bryan Abbott of Jupiter and Billy Ziobro of Palm Beach Gardens.

They shot 63 as Ziobro eagled the par-5 first hole on driver, 3-iron and 10-foot putt and added five birdies. Abbott made two birdies and some salvaging pars. They did not make a bogey.

It was the first Southeast Chapter victory for Kostelnik, Abbott and Ziobro. In May, Ziobro won the South Florida Senior Open at Jonathan’s Landing GC at Old Trail, Jupiter.

There were nine Assistants teams and five Seniors. The combined total purse for the two tournaments was $3,080
