Brooksville Country Club - A Little Hard to Find But Impossible to Forget

Brooksville Country ClubIf you’re looking for an experience that is dramatically different from the usual Florida golf course fare, consider Brooksville Country Club. Brooksville is a semi-private facility that welcomes daily-fee play at an affordable rate.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, Brooksville Country Club’s back nine offers a golf experience unmatched in Florida. Tumbling fairways weave through ancient Live Oaks while a unique set of “quarry holes” snakes along, around and in between the sheer rock walls of an abandoned limestone mine.

The more traditional front nine is no pushover, offering rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways and a variety of doglegs that will challenge and entertain golfers of all skill levels. Anticipation builds, however, as you make the turn to the back nine. As golfers putt out on the long, uphill par-5 eleventh hole, the upcoming quarry holes loom large.

The first quarry hole – Number 12 – is a breathtaking par 4 that is full of challenges. An upper left fairway and lower right fairway outline one of the quarry walls. A tee shot to the lower fairway will leave a blind second shot into the green. Find the narrower upper fairway and a short, downhill approach offers a legitimate birdie opportunity.

Number 12 at Brooksville has the incredible distinction of being named one of the “18 Most Fun Holes to Play in America” in the January 2011 issue of Golf Digest. Long-time Golf Digest Senior Editor Ron Whitten made the selections. The par-4 thirteenth is perhaps the most intimidating of the quarry holes. Standing on the tee on the downhill tee shot, the quarry walls seem to be closing in on you. However, the landing area is larger than it appears, so bomb away. Take plenty of club on the severely uphill approach shot or risk the ball rolling back nearly to your feet.

Number 14 is a 177-yard par-3 bordered by steep quarry walls on the left from tee to green. Play this downhill tee shot to the right side of the green to avoid a big number.

After two more conventional holes, Number 17 is the final quarry hole challenge. The downhill tee shot on this short par-3 must clear a pond fronting a wide, shallow green. Quarry walls just beyond the putting surface demand a precise short iron.

Before playing the course, warm up on Brooksville Country Club’s pristine practice range and short game area or get a feel for the greens on the practice putting green. Course conditions are excellent. The TifDwarf Bermuda greens are kept firm and fast. Tee boxes, fairways and greens have been overseeded for winter play.

Starting from the time you pull into the parking lot until the time you leave, you will receive friendly and professional customer service. Brooksville Country Club is staffed with outside personnel who will assist you with your bag as soon as you arrive. A member of the staff will be awaiting your arrival to check you in for your tee time.
