Cove Cay Country Club - Extensive Renovations Enhance this Hidden Gem

Cove Cay Country ClubIf you remember the Cove Cay Country Club golf course as best suited for short-hitting old men, you’re in for a big surprise. While many Tampa Bay area golf courses cut back on their maintenance budgets this past summer, Cove Cay undertook major renovations. The $1+ million in course improvements includes new greens, expanded teeing areas and upgraded practice facilities.

All 18 greens as well as the practice putting green have been re-surfaced with Mini Verde Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass. MiniVerde is the putting surface of choice at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville, home of the PGA Tour Players Championship as well as East Lake Country Club in Atlanta where the Tour Championship was held in September.

The new greens have been enlarged and feature less severe contours. MiniVerde greens are a rich, dark green and do not require overseeding. That means no more frustrating transition periods in the fall and spring.

The tee boxes have been expanded by 50 to 100 percent, offering greater shot values and flexibility in setting up the course. You’ll now find some tees 50 yards deep while others are 50 yards wide. The course never plays the same from day to day.

A newly grassed driving range with five target greens highlights the excellent practice facilities at Cove Cay. The teeing area features both shock resistant artificial turf and natural grass. Range balls are changed out twice annually, adding to the quality of your practice sessions. The undulating practice putting green has been enlarged to twice its former size.

During the renovation process, the course was lengthened by 300+ yards, stretching the par-70 championship layout to over 6,200 yards from the tips.

Originally built in 1972 by David Stewart, the Cove Cay golf course features narrow, tree-lined fairways and elevated greens. Water comes into play on 12 holes. The course, located on the shores of Tampa Bay in Clearwater, offers spectacular views and an abundance of wildlife to add to your golfing enjoyment.

The front nine is conventional in set up with five par 4’s, two par 3’s and two par 5’s playing to a par of 36. The back nine is less conventional with just three par 4’s, four par 3’s and two par 5’s. Cove Cay may be short on length but makes up for it with demands on your accuracy off the tee and your short game skills.

Cove Cay’s signature hole is No 17. This 524-yard par 5 runs right along Tampa Bay with wonderful views. After a wide-open tee shot the fairway narrows menacingly on the layup. The small, peninsula green is virtually surrounded by water making the approach shot a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

The recently renovated clubhouse overlooks Old Tampa Bay with one of the most beautiful views imaginable, offering an incredible backdrop for any event. Cove Cay is the perfect location for golf tournaments, banquets, business meetings and wedding receptions.

The clubhouse has meeting and banquet facilities to serve up to 250 people. The outside venues are perfect for any number of events, including ceremonies, receptions and private parties. The Cove Cay catering department can assist you in the planning of special menus, décor and entertainment designed to meet your needs.

Cove Cay Country Club is a semi-private facility offering a variety of membership options, including new seasonal memberships starting as low as $475. Other options include equity, associate and social memberships for both individuals and households.
