Chi Chi Academy Gets Super Sized Donation

The Chi Chi AcademyCLEARWATER - In 2009 Chi Chi’s took over the driving range facility across the street from the Chi Chi Golf Club and turned it into the Chi Chi Golf & Sports Complex.

Now West Coast Roofing Contractors Association will show up on Oct. 23 with a crew of over 70 volunteer contractors to replace the roof on the 5,000-square-foot pro shop building as a donation to the academy.

Recent improvements include more than 50 tee boxes (15 of them shaded) perched above a 30-acre field filled with targets varying from typical flags and stakes to atypical thumbnail greens and bullseye nets. It’s perfect for academy students and area golfers trying to sharpen their game.

There’s also a 60-yard scoring game area featuring sand traps and an undulating putting green that rolls a 10 on the stimpmeter.

Tom Hanson of Hanson’s Tree Service heads up the Tree Climbers for Kids group along with Tim Murray, Steve Godell, Juan Polvadaro, Roberto Hildago, Brian Goulv, Bill Howe, Lucy Olson, Jim Lott, DeNett Brooke, Brian Cushnie and Scott Olson.

On Oct. 9, the group joined together to manicure over 140 acres of trees and greenery at the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club. This public par-69 golf course and sports complex serves as the “public school campus” of the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Academy.

The academy is a privately supported public non-profit rescue school for grades 4-8 that pulls students red flagged by guidance counselors from Pinellas County School District.

These students need additional assistance to prepare successfully for high school graduation or they may be at risk of dropping out of high school. The academy also operates The First Tee of Clearwater, Boys and Girls Club and a public service program on the land.

When you play golf or use the Sports Complex, 25 percent of facility proceeds are used to fund these children’s programs. Talk to one of our experienced professionals to make a tee time or get instructions about video-lessons and group rates. For more information our teaching staff can be reached at (727) 216. 6389.

Coming soon to Chi Chi’s will be PGA World Golf Hall of Fame Inductee Chi Chi Rodriguez on Nov. 14 and 15 to help raise funds for the programs as well. For more information on how to participate or support the Academy, contact Cary Stiff at (727) 726.8829 x 202 or email
