Indian River Club Winter Series Champions

Andy Spears captured the first Winter Series event of the 2011-2012 season run by the Florida State Golf Association at theIndian River Club in Vero Beach, November 28-29. He was joined in the winner's circle by Gordon Blakeley and Lincoln Rodon, who won the Senior and Super Senior divisions respectively.

Andy Spears, of Palm City, went wire-to-wire in the Regular Division to win by eight strokes. In the first round Spears posted a two-under par round of 70, and also provided the shot of the tournament with a hole-in-one on the par 3 fourth hole. Spears continued his solid play in the final round, carding a one-under par 71, for a tournament total of three-under par 141.  Peter Navaretta, of Port Saint Lucie, finished in second place after posting rounds of 75-74.  Scott Jones, of Fleming Island, Mike Nealy, of Boca Raton, and John Vaccaro, of Sarasota, all finished tied for third place with a tournament total of 155.


Gordon Blakeley, of Lutz, posted a tournament total of two-over par 146 to win the Senior Division.  After a first round of two-over par 74, Blakeley shared the lead with four others heading into the final round. Blakeley posted a final round of even par 72 to win by one stroke. Joe Knight, of Santa Rosa Beach, finished in second place with a tournament total of three-over par 147. Lee King, of Stuart, and Samuel Martinez, of Miami, finished tied for third place with a tournament total of 149.

Lincoln Rodon, of Coral Gables, went wire-to-wire to capture the Super Senior Division by two strokes. Rodon posted back-to-back rounds of one-over par 73 for a tournament total of 146.  James Byer, of Lantana, finished alone in second place after rounds of 77-71, for a tournament total of four-over par 144. Barry Allison, of Stuart, and Richard Ray, of Kissimmee, finished tied for third place with a tournament total of 150.

The Winter Series events include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round.
